| "Up to 24 hours" of down time, Adam. This is a heavy duty maintenance of
the servers, among other things. See Major Nelson's post:

| Is it normal that during this outage of service, the Extender element of the
Xbox doesn't work?

| Your extender using Media Connect or a Media Center Edition computer, should
continue working. It does here, just fine.

Oct 18th 2am... Still down :-)
And no way to get an ETA, since all URLs are on xbox.com which is down...
Also, the XBOX dashboard should clearly better indicate that the Live
service is down for maintenance... You have to go and test network
connection, see that "MTU test" fails, and then click on the "More info"
button to see that it is because of a schedule maintenance...! How many
support desk calls you could have avoided by showing a clear front page
message...?? My 2 cents.

| The warning was there for several days on the dashboard, plus posted in all
public viewing areas of the web site and these public newsgroups.
Unfortunately, as I write this, both Xbox Live and xbox.com are still down
for the maintenance. 8-(

| Xbox (or Xbox 360) should work just fine, whether you're connected to Xbox
Live or not, Kevin. The relationship of the connection between the extender
and Windows Media Connect or a Media Center Edition PC lives on your Local
Area Network, not outside the LAN itself.

| My mediacentre is a Vista RC1 box & my Xbox 360 as an extender works fine
normally. But because the MS Xbox Live website is down, I can't log in to
it & I was advised I need to be logged in to Xbox live to run this Game.
Any ideas?

| If you're talking about one of the games for the Xbox 360, then, yes, we
need to wait for Xbox Live to come back online. The online gaming has
nothing to do with the Media Center Edition/extender relationship. That's
within your own LAN.

| Chris, I know what you mean but trust me, it will not let me use the XB360
as an extender because I cannot login to Xbox live as a user. Its says ,
onscreen that I need to test my network connections. When I test it all is
confirmed except XboxLive which fails. The reference to a "game" is that
the screen failure message refers to a game even though I am connecting to
Mediacenter.
I will put a pound to a penny that it will work when XboxLive comes back
online.
Also, Xbox.com website mentions nothing anywhere about XboxLive being down
which is pretty poor.

| That's because of the fact that you are using either Windows Vista RC1 or
RC2 (you need to be signed into XBOX Live Service in order to use the
Windows Vista Beta Media Center Extender during the Windows Vista Beta
Period). This will change when you Purchase and Install Windows Vista RTM
(Release to Manufacturing) in January 2007, Just FYI.

| Oh, yes, I forgot. As Kevin mentioned, the Vista beta requires it. I'm
running MCE 2005 currently, and didn't move over to the other partition.
8-) I provided a link previously - obviously down with the site - but when
you go to xbox.com there is a message in numerous languages saying the site
and Live are/were down for maintenance. Seems to be partially up now, and
more coming up all the time as the servers sync I suppose.

| Thanks Chris & Kevin, you're right - it makes sense that MS want feedback
hence having to connect to XboxLive for the purpose.
Having said that, the new Vista version of Mediacenter is much better than
the previous version & it works well too.
