Help - Want XBox Live in Hotel Using Laptop
|
|
|
| Ok, so I'm in a hotel this week and it has wireless internet available.
My laptop is on the net via wireless, and then I have it's wired
connection and my XBox connected via hub. For the life of me I can't
figure out how to shared the laptop's wireless internet connnection
such that the XBox can get on the net (or login to live). Any ideas???
I've tried ICS and even WinRoute, but I'm not sure how to get the
config right. I need some networking genius assistance.
Thanks!

| Yes, I'm not new to networking, but I'm wondering if things are a
little bit more complicated being in the hotel. Could they be blocking
specific ports? Can I check (w/o asking them)?
I've got the wireless side working (DHCP) with ICS turned on. The
wired side is 192.168.0.1 when it's connected. However, right now,
when the wired side is connected, I can't get to the internet anymore
(as if XP is trying to go through the wired side instead). I've got
the wireless connection set as the higher priority in advanced
settings.
Here's my ipconfig (when the wired side is connected to my hub):
C:\>ipconfig /all

With a little fiddling, I can get to the net with the wired side
connected, but the X-Box still can't get on. Any more ideas???
Thanks.

The blocking ports is very likely.
I have seen issues related to this in a number of Hotels.
Also if they are using any form of proxy server (again very common hotel
setup) they would need to configure specific rules for the port required for
the Xbox Live communication to take place.

| What ports do I need have opened for Live to work? Can I check to see
if they are (with my laptop, port scanner software, etc.)? I'm already
suffering from Halo 2 withdrawal. ...and what about losing my internet
connection when I try to share it (i.e. share the wireless nic's
internet access through the wired nic)? Fyi... the hotel is the
Holiday Inn.
Thanks.

| Ok, it works now... But I had to abandon the "through the laptop" plan
(may be something with my machine, but bridging from the wireless to
the wired just wasn't working). Working with the good folks at
GuestTek (the company that runs the wireless internet service for
Holiday Inn and others), we figured out that if I got a wireless
adapter from the hotel folks, connected it to the XBox and then called
GuestTek to have them assign an IP address to my XBox's MAC address for
the week (until I checkout), and then hard set the IP in the XBox
(along with Gateway, DNS, etc.), finally it all works. The only thing
is that I had to find the optimal position for the wireless adapter in
the room to prevent/eliminate lag. I found it, so now it works great.
Just thought I'd post the followup in case anyone else tries to do
something like this. Fyi... the tech support at GuestTek did a great
job for me (they actually knew what they were doing and were helpful).
later....
