Talking Feature Not Working

| My dear, sweet brother gave me his old MS adapter to plug into the
controller (he got a new Starter Pack) but when we tried to talk while
playing online, it didn't work. I could hear him but only very, very
faintly, even with the volume set to full. He could hear me but only "one
word in ten".
Can anyone help, or are both our units faulty (which seems unlikely since
his is brand new and mine (his old one) worked fine before)?

Hi Paul! (I'd about given up here - I've been on uk.games.video.xbox, so
many thanks for replying here.)
I've got a 512kbps connection with Freedom2Surf. I am currently in
negotiations with Anna (my wife) to upgrade to their 2mb service, but at the
moment, the jury's still out! (I'll let you know...)
Do you think the 2mb service would improve the voice feature?
