Hi,

I'm about to go Live and was wondering if it works well with Virgin.Net
(UK)?

Thanks

Yup works fine. If they supply the equipment tell them you want a router,
even if it costs a bit more, it'll make things simpler down the road.

Hi Chris,

I'm with Virgin.net broadband and it works fine both with USB modem and
router.
I emailed Virgin when I decided to get a router and they emailed back with
these (excerpt) recommended settings:
quote:

>VPI = 0
>VCI = 38

quote:

>ADSL Modulation Auto, then try G.DMT, then try ANSI T1.413 Encapsulation
>Mode PPP over ATM (PPPoA - RFC2364) VC-MUX Service >name Home 500
>Authentication CHAP MTU = 1430 Receive Window (RWIN)

quote:

>The formula for finding your "ideal" RWIN, is to take your latency (average
>ping time in ms x 1.5), multiply that by your advertised >(download) speed,
>and divide that by 8.

quote:

>Note: If setting RWIN below 8192, try using even multiples of MSS.

To be honest I didn't need to set up anything as the router (Netgear DG834G)
connected and set everything up automatically.

I did change the MTU, not because I had problems but because Virgin
recommended 1430 (trusting soul that I am).

I haven't encountered any problems other than a peculiar inability to
download the Unreal Championship security patch to play the game live. I
suggest, if you have this game, try downloading the patch from live before
installing a router.

Good luck

Zig

Thanks for the info everyone, noe I just hope Virgin double their speeds
like everyone else seems to be doing.

I'm just gonna use internet connection sharing until I can afford a decent
router in a month or so.

Funny you mentioned the Unreal problem...I was at a friend's house last
night and he had the same problem (he's on AOL using internet connection
sharing)

Hi Chris,

Virgin have just sent out a questionnaire to their (domestic?) customers on
the level of service and asked for any other comments. I for one asked for
increased bandwidth but we'll just have to wait and see! I haven't
encountered any problems with 0.5 mb except on some heavily loaded xbox
games. Having said that, there appears to be an accepted concensus that the
UK is lagging on the US servers but that's a different issue.

The Unreal problem is odd 'cos it was temporarily changing back to ICS which
cured the problem for me or maybe it was a coincidence of timing.

Good fragging.
