I would say it was definitely something in the router that didn't like that
update. I forgot to ask you yesterday, but do you have the netgear
configured to block incoming ICMP packets (ping) ? and if so, did you
disable that during your troubleshooting? I also noticed that netgear has
some filter rules to setup for their "standalone" routers. Did you try
entering those on your gateway? -if possible
