I cant connect to Xbox Live

| Hello to all:
I'm a bit frustrating with the connection of Xbox Live.
I'm from Spain and my adsl's isp is Terra, the O.S is Win Xp.
I have a ethernet card in my Pc and a usb modem (3Com).
I connect the xbox to the net card to my Pc and the modem to internet,
I have checked the option to share internet in others computers in the
modem configuration from Win Xp.
And, that all, I try to start to use Xbox Live buut I can't, and always
the console stop at second step of the connection.
And the strange thing is that I can play perfectly in Xlink through
internet.
Please, could you help me?

number one suggestion is to get a modem router, less firewall settings to
muck about with...
in xp check firewall settings on the connection to ensure ports are open....
