| I just subscribed to a DSL service. Unfortunately I don't have a
telephone line anywhere near my computer and it would be difficult to
run a new line.
Can I use a DSL Wireless Router as a stand alone box? That is, does a
DSL router need to be connect to a computer or does it just connect to
the DSL line & a power source? I would like to hook the DSL router to
a telephone jack on the first floor of my home (where there is no
computer) and receive the wireless signal at my computer on the second
floor (where there is no telephone jack)... thereby eliminating the
need to run telephone wire to my second story room.
Thanks.

connect the wireless router to your dsl line and power source and put a
wireless card in your PC. no problem. well. hopefully there aren't any
problems. when I set up my wireless router (as described here), I remember
having to hook up an ethernet cable first for some reason. after the
initial hard connection, I've been able to run completely wireless though.

Likely to need a wired connection to configure... most seem to work best
that way... if it auto connects you may get away with configuring the router
connected to your pc (but away from telephone socket) so that you can
communicate between pc and router... and then move to router to the
telephone socket, where you can then establish a wireless connection, and
configure the dsl connection out from there..... Thats assuming you have an
ethernet port on the PC and ethernet cable....

| Hello Marsh,
Bottom line is DSL needs a dial tone to work. If you cannot (or are
unwilling) to run new telephone line, you'll need to place your DSL modem
near your phone line. It's best to use the shortest runs as possible; if
you get too long with your connections, you may run into noise interference
with your connection, which will ultimately slow your connection.
XBOX.com has some great information that would probably really help you.
