Author I need "Xbox Live for Dummies"

Can anyone give me pointers to some good FAQs or beginner's introductions to
Xbox Live? I've already been to xbox.com.

I'm hooked up and my son is playing, so it's not connection info I need,
it's just info about the various features of the service itself.

Jeff:

There really isnt a whole lot more to the service... but I'll throw down a
few things and see if any are new to you:

- You can send friend requests with voice messages through the Dashboard
(mic required of course). Certain games support voice messaging within game
(such as halo 2, ESPN NFL 2K5, others), but you can only hear these messages
if youre playing a game that has voice messaging enabled (in other words
youre playing halo 2 and receive a VM from someone playing ESPN)

- Up to 16 people can join you in voice chat through the Dashboard.
- Get familiar with the location of the Network Troubleshooter (under
Settings menu)
- You can toggle whether you log into XBL every time you turn the Xbox on (I
dont like this) using the Settings menu.
- Certain games allow you to toggle your online status (appear
online/offline). This cannot be done on the Xbox, though.
- Certain games (like Halo 2) allow for mass invite spamming. Sounds bad but
it isnt - it invites your entire friends list (versus selecting each person
and inviting them).

shoot me an email, I'll share my GT with you and if you like I can walk you
through some more. Good luck!

Okay, let me ask a few specific questions, then.

Does "account" = "gamertag"? I notice that there's the option to create a
new account. Can you have multiple accounts under one subscription? When I
set up Live, I chose a gamertag based on my son's standard online alias,
since I bought the subscription mainly for him. However, I would like to use
Live as well under my alias. Can I simply set up a new account for me?

Is there a standard way to add guests to a game? Last night my son was
playing Dance Dance Revolution (don't laugh--I got the game for ME) and two
people joined in who were on the same Xbox. The names looked like "XYZ" and
"XYZ [guest]". We wanted to add me as a guest so we could both play but
couldn't figure out how.

Hey Jeff...

Yup you can go ahead and create a new account - so yes to have another
Gamertag you need another account and would have to cough up some money for
two accounts.

There's no standard way to do it, different games do things different...
Microsoft should really have some recommended guidelines if they don't
already.

Mech Assault and MotoGP for example - on the signin screen with a second
control you just select the Gamertag you use, and then scroll to guest.
Have a look around on the signin screen or join or host screens, it may
simply be a case of pressing the start button on the second controller too.

So then the answer is actually "No, you cannot have multiple accounts under
ONE subscription"? Or is it that "Account is not the same as gamertag and
while you can have multiple ACCOUNTS, they all share the same GAMERTAG"? If
that's the case, what is an account?

It's one Gamertag per account. 1 account/sub = 1 Gamertag. Sorry if it
wasn't clearer.

Account is synonymous with GamerTag. Each Xbox may hold multiple GamerTag
profiles. But a GamerTag cannot have multiple "aliases" as you described. If
you wanted one all your own, you'd have to buy a new one.

If you like, I have a 2 month free trial key you can use. Email me and I
will send you the key. I also play DDR (and I've gotten pretty good at it!)

Frak.

Actually we're currently using the 2-month trial. I'll convert over to the
real subscription when it runs out. Thanks for the offer though. Maybe I
will email you for your tag and invite you to DDR sometime!
