Author Banned from Live
Gaz Chell

Hi All,

I have just bought a second hand Xbox, I tried to connect to live, it let me
create an account and enter my credit card but then wouldn't connect.

I took the Xbox to a local repair centre who told me the Xbox had been
chipped, I told them to remove the chip so i could use Live.

When I got home I connected again to Xbox Live but was told that my Xbox had
been banned due to it being modified.

What do I need to do? I have e-mailed microsoft but no one has replied to
me.

Please Help.

Gaz.

Call the Xbox support number for your country and discuss this with them.
You can find the appropriate number on your country specific version of
www.xbox.com - go there and select the appropriate country.

Please note: you still may not be able to have your Xbox allowed back on
Live as it has been modified (opened chipped, dechipped etc) ad may still be
considered an unknown quantity to the Live service and thus may be regarded
as a risk to the Live environment. The exclusion of Xboxes that have been
tampered with is covered in the terms of service for Xbox Live
see
section 10 at http://www.xbox.com/en-us/live/termsofuse.htm
10. SERVICE OPERATION AND EQUIPMENT

The Service may only be accessed with an Xbox video game console, the
software and/or hardware of which has not been modified in any way (except
for Microsoft authorized repairs and upgrades). ... etc

It may not be that simple.
See my previous reply for why the poster may still not be able to use Xbox
Live on the box that breaches the terms of use of the service.

Josh, it may be related to any of the unauthorised modifications that we
detect that may be considered to be in breach of the terms of use for Xbox
Live and may result in a Xbox being prevented from connecting to the Xbox
Live service.

Hi,

Do you have a number I can ring in the UK? or a mail address?, It seems a
bit harsh from Microsoft to ban modified Xbox's, why do they do this?

I need to cancel my credit card cus it let me register before it told me it
was banned, so i'm paying for a service that for no fault of my own i can't
get.

I don't think I'd get this problem with a PS2.

Help please.

Thanks Gaz.

Well basically to stop people using modified games online, allowing them to
cheat. Therefore any modifications must be disallowed as someone running
around with an aimbot wouldn't be doing Microsoft's other customers a great
favour.

Buy a new Xbox come on the second hand prices are just like 10-15 quid less
then a new one, and you know a new one is going to come with a one year
warranty and probably won't be half-knackered. Just take the Xbox back, as
it's clearly the responsibility of the retailer to sell you goods that are
suitable for the purpose they've been sold, the retailer was silly enough to
take in an Xbox that had been opened up so go and ask them for a replacement
that does do what it should do.

No but then the PS2 has no online "service".

Gaz,

The reason modified Xbox are not allowed on the Live service is for a couple
of reasons.
The most important being security of the service and the other users on that
service.
If we allow a modified Xbox on Live we cannot gaurentee what it is running
or doing and thus it poses an unacceptable risk to the service.
The second reason as it assist in preventing cheating by users using
modified boxes to run cheats or other game modifications.

By ensuring only valid Xboxes are on the service we provide the most secure
and fairest playing field for all.

Gaz,

What are you trying to do?
You will (almost certainly) not get your modified (and subsequently
apparently unmodified) Xbox on Live.
If you are trying to cancel your Live subscription the best course of action
is to phone them directly on the number on the page I have already provided.
