I cant seem to find any other post with the same setup as me so here goes.
I have a pc connected to broadband with a wireless network (Win XP). I
connect my xbox to my pc with a crossover lan cable. I cant seem to get it
working. I get the message "xbox live is not responding" and when i go
into the connection settings it detects everything ok. Is there anything i
can do?? Cheers.

What base station/router are you using and why don't you just connect to it
with a regular RJ-45 Ethernet cable? Are you attempting to use Internet
Connection Sharing from the PC?

Im using a belkin 54g standard. I cant connect to it using a cable cause
the modem is in another building. I have internet connection sharing
enabled and can connect to other pc's on the network etc no problem. I
used to have broadband directly into my pc and connected through the pc
that way via ics) and it worked perfectly. I moved house hence the
wireless broadband connection i use now.

You've lost me on your set-up. Are you saying you connect your PC wireless
to the base station which is located in a different house?

I am running with the same setup as you and had a ridiculous number of
problems getting it working. I think that I finally got it working
with Internet Connection Sharing turned on, so my PC had a static IP
of 192.168.0.1. I changed the XBox settings so that it had an IP of
192.168.0.100, with a DNS of 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask of
255.255.0.0. I also had to make sure my firewall was allowing
connections from 192.168.0.100.

Rereading your message it sounds like the troubleshooter is telling
you that everything is OK - is that correct? What game are you trying
to connect to XBox Live with?

Ok ive got 2 reply's here.
Chris H - The modem is in my friends house next door. They run the
broadband. I use a wireless connection to log onto the broadband from my
house. I connect my xbox to my pc via crossover lan cable.

mgajmgaj@hotmail.com - If i leave everything in the troubleshooter to do
it automatically then it autodetects everything fine and continues to say
that my xbox live needs to be updated and will now restart the xbox to do
so. This happens and the update status bar just sits doing nothing until
eventually it says that xbox live is not responding. I am not trying to
connect with a game, just straight from the dashboard. Also, i tried
fiddling with the settings (like the ones you have) but nothing worked. It
doesnt help that im not exactly sure what i am doing. Any step by step
guides ? Thanks again all.

I'd take a look at which IP you're using as the Gateway. With ICS enabled,
you would need to use the one provided by your computer, since it is being
the "router" in this case.

Yeah, this is definitely correct. I'll try to recall exactly what I
did to get it working, this evening if I get a chance I'll have a look
at my settings and make sure this is right:

1. I had to change my router to have an IP address other than
192.168.0.1, as this is the default required by ICS. I changed it to
192.168.1.1, and changed subnet masks to 255.255.0.0 (not sure if this
makes a difference.

2. I enabled Internet Connection Sharing on my laptop for the
wireless network. This set my standard LAN IP to 192.168.0.1, which I
checked using cmd and ipconfig /all

3. I started my XBox and changed the XBox IP address to
192.168.0.100. I changed the Gateway IP address to 192.168.0.1 and the
Subnet Mask to 255.255.0.0.

4. I tried pinging my XBox from my laptop and got a success.

5. Everything worked.

It sounds like you're connecting OK but something is timing out
somewhere. What sort of router/hardware/firewall do you have? It's
possible that you can connect out but the update can't be pushed back
to your XBox. I really have no idea what I'm talking about though.

unfortunately the router is in the house next door so a cable connection is
not possible. ive checked out the link that you gave me but it doesnt seem
to have anything that i think can help me. It seems to assume that the
users pc is connected directly to the internet (which i used to have). I
think i might rent the new rainbow 6 game to get the updated xbox live
version 3 to help with the problems. I will keep you posted.

This is prob a stupid question but how do i change the xbox's ip? The
settings only seem to be for what my pc's ip is. Cheers.

Can you describe what your LAN setup is? If you're using a router or base
station, the DHCP feed should automatically take care of the IP assignment.
Are you using a straight Ethernet cable or the MN-740 wireless device? Are
you using Infrastructure for the settings in the Xbox Dashboard?

Ok, ill try my best to describe it all. Im using a Belkin Wireless ADSL
router (Model - F5D7630-4A). This is on all the time and needs no pc to be
on for a connection to the net. My pc connects to it using a Belkin
802.11g network card (Model - F5D7000). I have a Realtek RTL8139/810X
Family fast ethernet NIC. I connect the Xbox via RJ45 (crossover) to the
Realtek. I enable ics on the wireless network card. Should i enable it on
the Realtek also? Im not sure what you are talking about with the
Infrastructure on the dashboard. Hope all this helps.

There are two settings in the Xbox Dashboard, first for System Link games
and the other is for Infrastructure. Since you're not connecting to another
Xbox, you must be connected via Infrastructure to access the Internet.

As for the computer and networking you have going, is it not possible to
just connect with a regular, not cross-over, cable to the router? That
would be much better than trying to do the ICS connection.

However, if you must do the ICS, perhaps you should take a look here:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/connect/windowsics.htm There are also some
very helpful links from this URL.

At the PC, could you open an MS-Prompt command window and type "IPCONFIG/ALL
quote:

> abc.txt" (no quotes) to capture the resulting text into a file on the

root directory. Then cut and paste the results here.

is it not a bit dodgy posting all my ip info online cause someone could use
it to hack my pc? Especially since it would be EVERY bit of networking
info i have. I dont want to offend the idea (cause it is a good one) but
some people could use the info to rip me off. Im not too sure tho so could
anyone answer that one for me?

My experience with Xbox is that the connection must be nearly perfect;
any lags, droped packets, and the like will kill Live or make it
unreliable. Start with your laptop wireless connnection. Go to
www.broadbandreports.com and run a few speed tests late at night and see
what kind of upload/download you can get. Run the Ping Test also. They
might have 3000kb/s down and 256kb/s up, but your distant wireless might
not support anything close to that, depending on the signal level and
the signal/noise ration at your end.

Note that you are sharing the neighbors bandwidth so that your ability
to get a decent share depends on what their activity is. If they are
P2P users, they can saturate the bandwidth, leaving you nothing.
Upstream is crucial for cable since it is typically 256kb/s or lower,
and P2P uploading can saturate this quickly, leaving your Xbox unable to
respond upstream or downstream without significant lag. A 50% reduction
in upload speed will on *cable bandwidth*, slow everyone quite
noticeably. In fact, at 50% of rated upload, download on cable is
reduced about the same. Any noticeable speed reduction will not work in
favor of XBL.
