My son wants to get Xbox live, and I'm looking for the best way to get
him connected. I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router, and my son has
a computer with a Linksys Wireless G PCI adapter with speed booster.
Several questions:

1. Is it possible to hook the Xbox to the computer in my son's room to
get an internet connection for Xbox Live?

2. If I were to buy an adapter for Xbox, and were to get a Linksys
802.11B gaming adapter, would this slow down the network in my home? We
don't usually transfer huge files; mainly just some web surfing/IM on
my son's computer (I do online computer gaming on the main computer,
but that has a hard wire connection to the router). The reason I ask
this is that I heard that if you mix a "b" mode device on a "g"
network, the "b" mode prevails, and slows the network down.

3. I have a DSL connection; if my son were to play Xbox live at the
same time I was playing online through GameSpy, would that cause any
latency/lag issues?

Thanks in advance.

If you're running an 802.11g system, then adding a "b" device is going to
have a bit of an affect on the LAN. You might want to take a look at this
new device: http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=383 Remember, though,
that adding a device with 108 capabilities doesn't make it happen unless
your other devices also are compatible.

As for "issues" with the Xbox, we have a LAN with eight or nine computers
(only two wired), a Media Center Edition extender and the Xbox extender for
MCE in operation. I've never had a drop. Currently using a Linksys WRT55AG
router (it does 802.11b also) with four "b" devices among the computers.

Depending on what you eventually want to do, you can segment the LAN and
isolate certain devices (like the Xbox). Microsoft MVP Barb Bowman has an
Expert Zone column from a while back regarding segmented networks which
contains a lot of very good information:

Thanks for the input. Is it possible to just hook a CAT5 cable from the
Xbox to the computer with the PCI wireless card to access Xbox live?

If you use Internet Connection Sharing, Jeff. Then the computer must be on
at all times, otherwise there's nothing shared.
