OKAY! So it turns out that the problem was in the order of the
twisted pair cable. I recrimped the cat5 in the following order:
orange/white, orange, green/white, blue, blue/white, green,
brown/white, brown (left to right, tab in back). It works perfectly
now. Apparently when I was testing the cable, my laptop has a higher
tolerance for cross talk in an improperly formed cable.
