newbie NOT impressed with Halo2
|
|
|
| I'm a newbie to console gaming, after being a casual PC gamer for several
years. I've been a fan of FPS-shooters such as Medal of Honor: Allied
Assault, Call of Duty, and even fragfests like Quake3.
Got a Xbox console a few weeks ago. I'm lovin sports games like Madden,
action games like X-men:Legends, and fight-fests like Mortal Combat.
I tried Halo2 for several hours and I just don't like it. After
playing this, and also trying MoH:Spearhead on the Gamecube, I've come to
believe that a console FPS game just doesn't work. Aiming is choppy and
non-intuitive.
If this is supposed to be the "killer app" for Xbox, like some reviewers
have said, then I don't get it. I don't get the popularity of it either.

I am precise with aiming in console FPS. Maybe you just suck or have a short
attention span.

You have reached the heart of the matter - Consoles are for people either too
poor to afford a desent computer, and/or too lazy and dim witted to handle
more than 2 or 3 commands at a time.
They are intimidated at the thought of using their keyboard for anything else
but their homework and yahoo cyber, and break out into a cold sweat at the
sight on an instruction manual more than 3 pages long.
Pure and simple.
A 3rd category of people, which I fall into and I suspect you also, are those
who have a bit of money to burn, are gadget feinds and want something around
the spare TV to amuse them occasionally.

Halo is revolution for CONSOLE FPSs. Anyone who's been playing PC ones
for a while won't be impressed.

Sorry but I think you both nuts, Halo2 is the BEST FPS over anything.

Which is the sort of thing that consoles are made for as they
are designed as home arcade game units.
[vbcol=seagreen]
I find the PC just a little too easy to aim with and then
there are the cheats :P On the PC, I can achieve some very impressive
kill rates, I have Max Payne on the XB and PC and was like the
Terminator on the PC. Though the matrix mod for the game was just the
best ever!
[vbcol=seagreen]
I am really enjoying it and prefer my XB to my PC for gaming.
YMMV.

I will admit that having a XB was a cheap way to play quality
games as I couldn't be bothered to upgrade my PC for several years.
As for your further comments, apples and pears are PCs and consoles.

Ha! Your trolling is pathetic, any good compie knows that you
dont need no stinking manual!

Your point is what? My modded XB plays dozens of games,
classic and modern and acts as my media centre and divx player. Beats
using my PC and it is all in one convenient case.

Point ?
I think it was pretty well stated in the first paragraph.
The dude asked a question, I supplied an answer, same as you.
Whats yours ?

Well thats cool more power to ya.
I prefer my 30 inch LCD TV,P4 3.60 w/22 inch Sony LCD monitor & 256 MB
Radeon X800XT and thumping Logitech surround sound system as my 'media
center' , but to each their own.
Xbox is just fine to pass a few boring moments, or to get a laugh out of
some of the novelty games like babe volleyball and golf.
I've been playing consoles since the Turbo Grafx 16 [which I still own and
use occasionally], So don't get me wrong - They do have their place.
Serious gaming is still well entrenched within a PC.

Halo requires an attention span? It's an extremely linear FPS, you don't
need to be Magellan to know where to go and what to do.

If you are a PC gamer, jumping to a console FPS won't be easy. I used to
play Unreal Tournament all the time on my PC, so going to a "limited"
console controller to play a FPS wasn't easy. However, it's been years now
since I've played ANY game on my PC, so console controllers and their
configurations have become second nature to me.

We will see about the popularity of the game over time. MS still has a
long way to go get just the same people who bought the first Halo to buy
Halo 2. Just look at what people are saying about the game are starting
to negate all the hype MS spent to generate for the game. People all
over the Net are saying the same things after they played through the
short campaign, why was this game hyped so much?
I really hope MS is working internally on something in addition to Halo
for the next xbox.

I haven't played a PC game since getting into consoles about 3 years ago.
It doesn't have anything to do with money. I guarantee my SMP Opteron
worstation cost more than your quaint little PC, and will run circles around
it. But I use it for the purposes that it was designed, and designing the
next killer mod for some twitch game isn't one of them (for me).

The "instruction manual" I was reading this morning was 1600 pages of Oracle
documentation. I know, I know, that's nothing compared to your average pc
FPS manual. I mean -- point, shoot, jump, strafe, change weapons -- how do
you guys keep it all straight?

Maybe some people just prefer console games and console gaming? Is it
really that hard to understand? Enjoy your pc and please don't feel so
intimidated by consoles' popularity. Just don't link your gaming
preferences to some ridiculous assumption that you have more money and are
smarter than others.

You should try Halo 1 instead. It's a classic, epic game.
Lightning definitely didn't strike twice for Bungie.
It's like when Goldeneye came out...one of the best games ever.
Everyone tried to crank out an fps that would be as good, but they
never captured the magic.
Halo 1 is a classic for all time. Halo 2 is not.
Halo 1 unfolds at an excellent pace, Halo 2 tries to cram every trick
into a short game.
Don't give up on consoles if Halo 2 is your benchmark.

So far, I agree. Halo 2 is great multiplayer, though, so it is worth it.
I rented Halo, and gave up on it becasue it was just too hard to contol.
I was too used to the keyboard and mouse. But I remeber having to
force myself to use the mouse on Quake.
Playing the Mac version was easier, but it was just too much for my
system, and I don't upgrade to play games on my computer. So I tried
Halo on the Xbox again, becasue I was really enjoying the story, and the
tactics.
After committing a bit of time, it began to feel second nature to me. I
still think keyboard and mouse is more efficient, but Halo feels very
natural with a controller now.
If you already have an Xbox, and like FPS's, Halo is worth the effort to
get used to.

Hmmm...I wonder if they'll ever build a small trackball into a
controller. That could be sweet.

|
| I guess it's a matter of taste.
I think playing games on a PC sort of borderline stinks.
I have a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, 160 GB hard drive, DVD burner
and 52x CD-ROM, Radeon 9600, 21" monitor.
I have Halo for PC, never play it. I have played other FPSs on PCs in
the past, including various Unreal and Quake versions.
By far, my two favorite games overall, as well as my two favorite FPS,
are Halo 1 and Halo 2 (undecided which is #1 and which is #2) on the
Xbox.
Things I don't like about playing on the PC as much:
- Everybody does not have the same hardware, which seems innately
unfair for multiplayer.
- Macros and keyboard cheats seem easier to achieve.
- Using a mouse gives you an unrealistic ability to both move in tiny
increments, and to turn 180, or even 360 or more, with the flick of a
wrist.
(When people talk about PC games being "better", I suspect that they
are viewing those three things as a positive rather than a negative.)
- I just prefer the better-integrated, more consistent way that
console games work. All games work fine, as they are written for the
exact same hardware. I would say one PC game out of four doesn't work
out of the box with my setup and I am sure I'm not alone in that
regard.
- I prefer a controller to a mouse/keyboard setup, just in terms of
comfort. I prefer lounging on my sofa in front of my 36" TV to sitting
at my desk in front of my 21" monitor.
Things I prefer about PC games (short list):
- More complicated games translate better. I wouldn't want to play C&C
Generals on a console, although I guess you could do it. I wouldn't
even want to play Civ2 on a console.
- Graphics can be a lot better on hardware like mine or better.
I think generally, the PC people who bash consoles are either fanboys
who can't understand why anyone has different preferences from their
own, or people who like to cheat. Not to be too blunt, but please note
that I am posting this on Xbox forums only. If you don't like Xboxes,
why are you here?

this is absurd... saying that ppl who play FPS on consoles are lazy or
just too cheap to buy a good computer is the dumbest thing i've ever
heard. i play FPS on both the pc and the xbox and enjoy both methods of
gaming. Halo 2 is the best FPS i've ever played and i've played all of
them that are known to me. Can you tweak the graphics on your computer
to blow any current console out of the water? of course you can. the
fact that some ppl prefer a keyboard/mouse setup is cool too, but don't
trash the ppl who like using a gamepad such as the xbox controller, it
is a very good controller for the most part, much better than the
gamecube (cheaply built) one i find and just as good as the PS2
controller or better. personally, i would've said before Halo 2 came out
my best experience playing any FPS was in the days of quake 1 and i used
the old mouse/keyboard setup; however, Halo 2 has totally drawn me in
and i am enjoying it to it's fullest potential. Maybe it is just you who
are too lazy to adapt and quite frankly, suck at it. Go pick yourself up
a keyboard/mouse for xbox, it's out there.

Please, PC gaming, no matter how "cool" you think you are having
wasted so much money on that system, will never been in the same
class. Realistically, not many people will waste so much and get so
little of a return (only several games really need significant specs
on the PC). Serious gaming in terms of "stupid people paying
ridiculous amounts for the newest hardware every 3 months to have the
'best'" is entrenched within the PC gaming community. Not to mention,
I can just buy a game disk for the XBOX, PS2 or Gamecube, put it in my
system and PLAY it, instead of fooling around with PC settings, trying
to resolve "fatal exceptions errors" etc. I think that's where most
PC gamers get most of their enjoyment.

Wow, you'd hate to see my crowd! We're a bunch of computer geeks, most of

You guys do understand that what you basically want is basically an
increase in unrealistic player control?
The characters in Halo can only turn or pivot so rapidly. Guess what -
so can actual humans (or actual covenant, if such things existed).
Everybody on the Xbox faces the same limit (that being - it takes you
a full two seconds or so to rotate 360 degrees - the horror).
Additionally, nobody on the Xbox can create macros.
So, you won't be at a disadvantage. You just won't be at an advantage,
either. Which is precisely the point.

I'm not sure what kind of physical debilities you suffer from, but if
it takes you 2 seconds to turn around, I think you're thinking of
those nightmares where your feet are mired in...whatever.
I prefer consoles to PC, but I totally concede that the PC control

The console games are better, but there needs to be a paradgm shift in
control for the next generation.

Life, in general, for me is all about having options.
You get what you pay for - The more you spend, the more options that you
have.
Hell, thats the only reason to have $$$ in the first damn place - Options.
Do I sit here and pick my XXX, or do I just to Hawaii, then get a new
plasma TV when I get back.
Hhhmmmmmm tough choice.
Pc games are just way more sophisticated, customizable, absorbing.
You pick some adjectives.
How many here are complaining how lame the latest and greatest offering
from xbox is ?
It'll probably be in the bargain bins in a couple months for $9.95 -
Because its too easy and short.
You have a point, to be sure.
Consoles probably do deliver more bang for the buck ... And sure,
incompatable games/ fatal exceptions can be a PITA.
I've seen a fair share of posts here complaining about dead/ malfunctioning
consoles here, so don't act like you've got manna from the sky or
something.
I bet I can swap a DVD drive alot faster and economical in my PC than you
can in an xbox.
| |
|
| To spin around while controlling a weapon with any accuracy? I think
I'd be lucky to do it in 2 seconds.
However, just spinning around probably takes more like 1 second.
Consoles are a lot closer to than than a mouse-performed .1 second
spin is.
PC controls are only "better" to those who prefer them. Console
controls are, by their nature, less instant in causing actions. But,
they are the same for everybody, so you're not being put at a
disadvantage, so how is that "inferior"? The answer is, it's a matter
of taste. Some like jumping 40 feet in the air and spinning around
with full composure in a split second. Some are okay with jumping 15
feet in the air and spinning around with full composure in 2 seconds.

Yes, but there is a point of diminishing returns, too. Spending $3000
on a gaming PC over a $150 console just so you can have a little more
resolution and higher frame rates is well beyond the pale, IMHO.
I used to enjoy building kick-XXX systems myself, I'd spend a fortune
on the latest video cards, monitors, fastest motherboards and CPU's,
etc. I'd tweak all the software conflicts, find all the right drivers,
and deal with all sorts of bizarre conflicts. And all that to play one
or two games (playing the next big thing would, of course, require an
upgrade).
Then one day I played the latest console. Pop the disc in and play,
end of story. No upgrades needed, no software conflicts, respectable
graphics and sound, the ability to play them in bed or on the couch. I
never went back to my PC.

Just like the 1st Halo, the campiagn is NOT what makes it so cool,
it's the multiplayer modes. The campaign is just a warmup for the
online Live play. If you haven't played against real humans online
yet, you've missed out on about 75% of what makes it so cool.

It's nice to hear someone come right out and admit that Halo is just
another mediocre shooter. Too bad the gaming press is too sleazy to be

As the original poster of this thread, I'd like to point out that my
experience with Halo2 is primary multiplayer via system link (I went to a
"system link" party).
I think console games are great-- however not FPS, RTS, flight sims, etc.
Last night, I spent 3 hours playing Call of Duty in a rifle-only server.
Such a superior experience in contrast to MP Halo2 IMHO

Wow, I want to be just like you -- Is there a specific law that says I can't
enjoy the best of both worlds. Be that as it may, PCs have their place, and
certainly my XBox has its places as well. I can't imagine lugging a computer
to the office and wailing on giant screens against others -- with PC based
games a lot of the time you're just playing against other Internet players
for multiplayer. The XBox provides cheapp social interaction - and this is
what most people are looking for. So you can replace a DVD drive in a
computer faster -- is that supposed to mean that you're better then the rest
of us? As for your comment about playing console games since TurboGrax 16 --
please, a HUGE number of people here remember programming with a Timex
Sinclair 1000, battering around on Atari or an Intellivision. Consoles are
what you make of them. Big fun with minimal effort to maintain. As for Halo
II being in the bargain bin anytime soon? I doubt it -- Halo I took forever
to be a platinum pick. How much did Doom III or Half Life II presell??

No, the campaign is fine. But it's just a small part of the picture.
Playing the best shooter against a computer AI is never going to
compare to online/multiplayer play.

Obviously you have a hard time recognizing tasteless humor when you see it.
I got 2 girls 4 & 7 and I have no doubt they'll grow up to be hot babes like
their mother.
Don't you ever look at your girl and try to envision what she'll look like in
her teens, 20's ?
Surely you don't imagine her growing up to be a fat spotted cow ?
Just because I recognize that they are gonna be hotties someday doesn't mean
that I'm lusting after them.
Only a sick mind would think such a thing.

Here here! (As in medieval here here). I bet you also have a game
that you have only played for about fifteen minutes and then never
played it again. (For me, it's
Tony Hawk 4 for the Xbox). Oh well, those games are good for trading
in and getting something that is at least worth something to you for
more than two weeks.

I've got games I had for months and haven't played - Though I think I'll get
into crimson skies eventually because
1) I liked it on the PC and
2) I love aircraft
I've also got a nice wireless controller still in the pack, and two memory
modules which have not memorized a thing.
I've held off on the DVD remote so far, as I've already got DVD players
coming out of my ears.

That's exactly why I dropped out of PC gaming for the most part. In the
last five years I've bought only two PC games half-life($30) and Max
Payne(only 10 bucks).

Awesome stuff, mate. I've only got an AMD64 4000+ (2.4 gig, 1mb cache),
2x 256mb nvdidia gfx with 256 bit linked together, 21" crt monitor
(because honestly, and as a gamer I'm sure you know, flatpanels suck XXX
for true gaming), a little 7.1 creative sound system.
I wish I had more, but you know how it is with a BMW and a merc in the
garage to your 10 room house. And money is not the reason why I don't
have a girlfriend on the side, because I love my family. But each to his
own, eh stud?
The point of this is, I still prefer playing Halo 2, because it works
and there's extremely little cheating. Just skills ;)
