I get your point about killing the goose that laid the Golden Egg but it
can also be looked at this way-

On February 9th Bungie releases a campaign only disk entitled "Halo 2.2:
The Battle for Earth". It sells for $30. Bungie and MS make even more
profit, campaigners are happy. Some resolutions are reached in the plot
but like any good series there is a hint of some trouble brewing on the
horizon setting the stage for Halo 3 as the killer app for Xbox 2.

And if there is a Halo 2.2 within the next 3 to 6 months it's basically
the expansion pack strategy that so many other video games have used before.
