| Hey Gamers,
Like the rest of the world I bought Halo 2. I am finding that a lot of the
levels are way too dark. I am wondering what other people think of the
lighting. I am becoming extremely frustrated with walking around in the
dark and being killed time after time. Is this how bungie improved graphics
by turning out the lights.
very disappointed

| Some of it reminds me of another Bungie creation - Marathon!

Reminds me of the last 5 minutes of many X-Files episodes. Mulder and
Scully running around in the dark. Guess they were lucky the flood wasn't
chasing them...

| The only thing I can think of why the game is so dark is that, with less
lights, there is less real time rendering of said lights, giving the higher
polygon count of all the newer sparkly covenant and gameworld a bit of
framerate boost..
I would have been most satisfied with the Halo 1 graphics engine. This is
after all, a game for the x-box, not a high end computer.

| I played it on my friend's TV, which is on its last legs, and was very
frustrated by how dark it was. He has a 27" set that has rolling
distortion bands on the screen at times, and just generally looks like
it's about to blow up. I left his house after playing about 20 minutes
of the campaign and 10 minutes of multiplayer shaking my head and
hoping that it was just his set.
I got my copy the next day (technically the same day - but 9 p.m. vs.
2 a.m.) and tried it on my 36" set, a pretty high-quality standard
rear-projection Toshiba. It looks great on my TV. I don't have trouble
seeing stuff, unless I'm supposed to (that is, situations where the
flashlight is called for in the game).
I wouldn't say it's much darker than the first game overall - remember
those access tunnels in the Pillar of Autumn, and The Library? The
multiplayer maps may be a little darker on average.
I recommend seeing if you can adjust your set's brightness/contrast,
if it appears too dark.

Those are areas of the game you expected to be dark.. in a lot of areas in
Halo 2 where you'd expect a lot of light, especially in the first level on a
human space ship, there is little. Sure everyone could turn up the
brightness contrast, but what a pain in the butt that is to have to do over
and over again "if" we keep replaying the game? Besides, if we (read Master
Chief) can't see the covenant, how can they see him? heh.. Playing as the
Arbiter, they have no special lighting added to their vision.
