I liked the last "task" you have to complete more in Halo 1. It had an
epic feel The Halo 2 ending (minor spoiler) feels like a Mortal Kombat
boss battle.

However, I like the storylines equally, and the cinematics in Halo 2's
ending are better (though watching the ring blow up was cool).

I like Halo 2's ending more, despite the popular opinion. Halo's ending was
weird just in that it seems to me that destroying Halo, while necessary, was
a complete defeat on humanity's part.

Can we explore this point further? I'm not certain I understand what you
mean by complete defeat -- other than having to sacrafice the few to save
the masses.

The destruction of Halo was a major blow to humanity. It was the most
powerful weapon they possibly could have had. If the pulse generators were
disabled while Halo was activated, it wouldn't have set off the other rings,
and the majority of the galaxy (and all of humanity) could've been saved
while the entire Covenant could've been destroyed, and the Flood deprived of
food. If humanity had gained control of Halo, they would've won the war.
While I agree that the humans on Halo were hopelessly outmatched and that
destroying it was the only way to save humanity, it was still a defeat. A
necessary one and a better one than the activation of Halo, I grant you, but
still a defeat, which in my opinion gave a slightly unsatisfactory ending.
The game still rocked, but I would've liked a more victorious finale. Of
course, this way paved the way for Halo 2, which in my opinion was well
worth it.

I thought Halo 1's ending was morally complex and very impressive
overall. I LOVE how Cortana's voice is defensive and how the chief is
obviously thinking about the Marines they probably blew up in order to
achieve a larger goal.

I can't speak for Devala Rees, but maybe the meaning was that it was
an act of desperation and was a sacrifice of lives - kind of a
kamikaze attack on a larger scale.

I think Halo 2's ending is just as good ... for the record. I mean,
the storyline and cinematics. I think driving the Warthog to escape
was a lot more inspiring than the last bit of gameplay in Halo 2,
though.
