Question - Fired up the game yesterday and was wondering if anyone else has
the issue (esp in cutscenes) where graphics seem to just pop up (mostly in
the background) a split second later than the rest of the scene, or see
detail change from low to high in other scenes. Example (spoiler): In the
scene just after MC gives the covenant back their bomb -- they are flying
down to earth to fight the covenant on the ground and fly over two marines
lying down with sniper rifles doing their recon thing.. well, i have the 2
marines loading up last so they aren't even in the scene when it first
loads. I am wondering if this is just due to the intense amount of
information/detail that Bungie has put into the game and the decision to
load certain information last in scenes is all i'm seeing, or if my xbox is
on the verge of spewing chunks or something else entirely.

I've noticed the same thing. I was wondering if it was because I'm using
component 480P. Haven't gotten up the energy to reconnect with Svideo as
yet to find out.

don't bother switching to s-video, because it does the same thing no
matter what kind of set-up you have. just part of the game :P

Your XBox is fine. What you're talking about is one of the many reasons
I feel a bit let down by Halo 2. The game designers made it gorgeous--no
doubt about that. But they did it at the price of the pop-in you see,
and the pop-in is incredibly annoying. It makes immobile portions of the
map flicker, so you think there's something there. It's visually
jarring, and it's hard to believe that they couldn't have fixed it at
least in the cutscenes.

You can make the same thing happen virtually anywhere just by suddenly
wheeling to a different part of the room.

I haven't had that happen. I dunno...

This hasn't happened with me either. I am using the advanced adapter -- not
HDTV though.

What I believe that is is the bump and light maps loading for a scene. The
Xbox is a relatively small amount of memory for a PC (64 MB, I think, and
that's got to be shared between vid and the CPU), and Halo has texture maps,
detail maps, bump maps, and light maps (possibly others as well, including
model LODs if it uses those). When you change a scene, it has to swap out
maps not used in the scene with ones that are, so you'll see them load,
giving the model more detail as time goes by. That was probably the main
reason H2 disappointed me at first, as my expectations were high, but I saw
the little flaws that let me down (as opposed to, say, Fable, that had more
subtleties and polish than I expected thus exceeding my expectations).
However, I'm starting to have those long, tactical battles finally that I
like so much about Halo (not to mention that some of the city combat with
the marines was a lot of fun)

Ok.. I have seen none of this yet and I'm about half way through the
game. No flickering. No graphics popping in a split second later. Since
so many are I can only think of one thing, short comings in the
component parts of the newer Xboxs Vs. older Xbox models. I have an
original Xbox, got it like a month after they came out, when they came
with the larger controller (Black and White buttons on the top). I have
heard that the later Xboxs that were built after the $200 price drop
were made with even cheaper component parts. If this is true maybe the
cheaper video components can't handle the graphics load from the game.

Ok, I am thinking that the problem lies in the game/xbox models. After
thinking
on it a bit and then coming to read replies, I cannot believe Bungie would
release
a sequel to one of the most popular games of all time that has visual
hiccups.
My X-box has Mfg date of 2-18-03 with 1st 3 digits of product code as 421
(for anyone "inside" that has info on what the deal is).
Not sure if it's "cheap" parts or what, but I am using Microsoft's Advanced
AV
pack with s-video as my output so that I can use the digital output for
sound.

I got a new Xbox (rev6?) with the holiday bundle late October and have only
muffled sound problems, the video is great.
I'm plugged into std crt TV's composite AV inputs.
My question now is will Microsoft issue a patch(s) for the hard drive or
free revised game DVD for all the technical problems?

I have not noticed any serious video issues (completed the campaign).
I have seen more places where Covenant fall from the sky into their
positions as you approach - I caught glimpses of this in Halo 1, but
it happens right in front of you in at least one place in Halo 2. I've
also noticed that my dead body twitches a lot for no apparent reason
(no explosions, etc).

I have an old Xbox. Maybe Buster's theory has merit, I dunno. I also
have the limited edition version, but I doubt that matters, as the
disc I am using should be identical to the non-limited disc.

well the only problem i been experimented is the muffled
sound, specially when Cortana speaks to me, no matter if
i am at outer space or in Halo or earth, but no glitches,
no pop in, no dancing walls tec, my xbox is rev 6 i
replaced the good old rev 2 last mouth, and i am hoping a
download via xbox live to correct some features that
right now i can't remember.

The muffled sound thing is supposed to happen. It's whenever you're in a
vacuum.

forget about the vacuum Devala, i think that is software
problems, cos i now were i am standing in a game, so i
can interpreted the situations, for example, in Fable
when you get drunk, the screen is blury, or when you slow
the time the voices get slower too, so don't tell me that
is the F4(k1n6 vacuum man.

I'm still not sure after reading all these posts as to whether or not it's
an old Xbox/out of date hardware issue, or something wrong with the game.
For example, I used to notice these visual glitches a lot during the first
few levels, but once past level 9 or 10, they didn't seems as frequent. And
levels further in from that I didn't see many if any.In some of the early
Master Chief cutscenes I'd see his texture go from low res to high res...but
in later Master Chief cutscenes I don't see the glitches at all. IT's worth
noting that in the Gamespot.com streaming video review of H2, the guy also
mentions these video glitches: "textures going from low res to high res",
etc. It's a mystery, and I aint forking out the cash for a "newer" xbox
until I'm sure. All I did was plug the 3 plugs that came with the Xbox into
the scart socket on my portable Sony tv. I don't know what else to try.
