Author Halo 2 campaign help sought (minor spoilers)

I preordered my copy and paid extra for overnight delivery. It was
waiting on my front porch when I got home from work at 9 p.m. I made
good progress but got bogged down, and that's why I'm posting, to get
un-bogged.

I fired it up and started plowing through on Normal. It's great - the
same things that we loved about the first game are there, only, in
most cases, better. The storyline is so much richer than the original
- I think any true Halo fan will love it. (The people who don't "get"
Halo, and think it's just a Quake-type FPS, probably won't appreciate
it.)

MINOR, UNINTENTIONAL SPOILERS FOLLOW DUE TO THE NATURE OF ASKING FOR A
TIP. I HAVE TO DESCRIBE WHERE I AM IN THE GAME. DO NOT CONTINUE
READING IF YOU WANT TO REMAIN UTTERLY FREE OF SPOILERS.

I am in the second phase of the Covenant campaign, Buyer's Remorse.
I'm in the two-level area with a big sentinel with a special shield
(the third one you fight). There are some flood running around, and
lots of regular sentinels. There are two rooms at the back of the
area, one with what looks kind of like cryotubes, the other with a big
black piston with no lights or controls (that is, it does not say
"press X to activate piston", or anything else, when you stand near
it).

I have spent the last two hours trying to get out of this room! I am
sure it's obvious and that I'll feel like a dolt when I find out what
the trick is, but I am going absolutely nuts here.

I can't jump to a hall entrance that I see on the wall, about 20 feet
over and 15 feet down - I just barely miss each time I try and I am
pretty sure I'm doing it correctly.

I can't find a ledge on the wall so I can jump down without dying.

I have shot out lights and that seems to trigger reconfigurations in
the room, but no changes so far that are helpful, or that activate the
piston.

Help! What do I do here? I am very eager to finish the campaign, so I
can go back and try it on Heroic, and get a second helping of the
storytelling.

Well, I'm still at the beach on Earth, so you're farther than I am. Can't
help you there! I'll tell you if I get there and figure it out.

you just have to activate the piston...my friend and i were stuck
there for at least half an hour or so...killing flood and sentinals
(repeat) trying to jump to the hall you mentioned. dont think its
possible..he went and activated a piston i never noticed...then you
just jump down it like the other ones. halo 2 is at his house so i
cant tell you what room its in..it might be in the bottom section i
cant remember exactly

Well, nevermind ... sort of. I finally found the piston (not the black
one that I was looking at earlier). However, I still don't know what
causes the piston to show up or disappear ... whether it's random, or
triggered by some action I took. So if you do know, I could still use
the info for when I play back through. (I am currently in Shooting
Gallery on Normal.)

Thanks for anyone who replies before this post shows up via google
groups - Keith

I figured this one out tonight. When you come in, you can really only see
the right half of the ledge. Go cammo, run out and left and drop down the
ramp. Then go cammo again, run back up and toward the back of the ledge.
Jump up into that area and make your way further "left". You'll come back
out on the left half of the ledge, drop down the ramp, recammo, and go back
to the back left corner. The piston is in there.
