I found this game and was wondering what people think of it. Is it worth
$50? Can you get it anywhere other than the HPS site?

NWS has it for $29.99:
http://store.yahoo.com/yhst-1200024...airpowarov.html (their
url is also www.nws-online.net, but you get redirected to this internet
storefront).

I played the original before any patches/mods came out, and it didn't
offer you enough chances to plan--most of the scenarios already had
routes entered and even planes in the air. I understand updates have
modified this so you have more planning, but you still can't do full-up
days/weeks long campaigns. The game does run in continuous time (from
real-time to faster-than-real-time), although as I recall you can pause
to enter orders. Not a whole lot for the Vietnamese player to do in
most of the scenarios except fire off SAMS (you don't get plan the
placement of your SAM sites or radar).
