Nope, it's convenience and the fact that her "ISP" is her neighbor with a
WAP. If one had a regular need to copy files between PC's, wired gigabit is
the way to go. But if you just need online access, even 802.11b is
adequate.
BTW, for the Linux-heads, I just found that Fedora includes freeradius,
which is about all you need to set up WPA on your WAP. (I had previously
thought I would have to buy an expensive Radius appliance for that.) WPA
makes secure wireless networks much easier to administer, and more secure,
than WEP. You set up the Radius server with usernames and passwords, and
the WAP to consult the Radius for those, and then you get stronger keys and
periodic key changes, and you don't have to remember 26-character hex keys.
The protocol resembles logging in to secure web servers. There's links to
howto's on the freeradius home page.

No, it's a trade- he gets to use our trash service, and we get to use
his DSL. (For the small [six cubic yard] dumpster we get, it's now over
$43 a month, so splitting that makes it less than the $28 a month they
want for a single small [one cubic yard] "can". We both do major yard
maintainance, so we need lots of trash space.)
Allen was paying us $20 a month for the trash, but this way, no money
has to be paid, and it feels more neighborly. We are truly blessed
to have them for neighbors.
