| Gak. I'm getting a lousy 19KB/second download connection-
it's gonna take forever to get the proggie. At 283MB, you do the
math.........
The wireless card in this laptop sure works better. Anyone want
to hunt me up a wireless card for Beastie? All I know is it's gotta be
a "G" type......

I got a nice TrendNET USB G card on sale at the local PC Club a couple
weeks ago for $10. (Normally $30.) Seems to work pretty well.

Way cool! I thought they might be very expensive still.
Is it easy to install?

No it's pretty tough. I can never get those damn USB things to get into the
hole! ;) ;)
I figured the drivers would be crap, but I like them better than the ones I
get with D-Link wireless stuff, which don't work when my laptop first
powers up. I have to unplug and replug the PCMCIA card to get it recognized
*after* I log in. The TrendNET is much more reliable.

I'd recommend PCI over USB. Can be had just as cheap, bit less hassle at
times too. Also, for a desktop, it frees up a USB port, and cant
accidentally get unplugged or something stupid.

Her PC has up to 8 USB ports, and it comes with dongle for more convenience.
But, yes, personally I would go PCI.

Still, I go built in as much as possible. There have been times where I've
used that many USB devices similtaniously

I was going to check there! LOL That little gizmo would make
computing life even more enjoyable, and now that the price is reasonable,
*VERY* enjoyable!

I understand your points, but I've got USB ports all over the place!
And I've had no trouble with plugs coming loose, so the USB is fine
for me.

OTOH, with USB, you could get a long A-A cable (5 meters or less) and
remote it up high to get good signal.

With PCI, you can hook up a remote antenna to do the same if needed.

That reminds me of a story....
My sister's boyfriend gave me a call. He was having trouble with his
Internet service. He had moved his computer, plugged everything back in,
but had no connection. I had him double-check his connections, including
his cable modem. Everything was fine. I had him try the usual things,
like ipconfig /renew, etc.
Then, about 20 minutes later, he said, "Oh. I shouldn't have had that
beer. I'm so stupid." After a few minutes, I finally got it out of him.
He had connected everything, just as he said. The only problem was that
he had taken the USB cable from his computer and plugged it into the
wrong port on the cable modem. Sure enough, he had pushed it into the
Ethernet jack on the modem.
Before you wonder how the hell he did that, try it yourself. Grab a USB
cable and a NIC. I would recommend doing this with the cable and card
disconnected from the computer. The peripheral side of the cable (the B
connector IIRC) fits nearly perfectly into an RJ-45 jack. It would
actually be very easy to do, especially if you were connecting an
unfamiliar peripheral to your computer by touch.

If it were anybody else but Miracle, I'd chime in by saying that USB is
a lot easier to hook up. Miracle, however, can easily handle a simple
PCI installation.

You're going to be so proud of me. :D
I built a computer from scratch!!!! YES! Me!
The *only* help I had was from the fellas in here, with Quixote
doing all the legwork in picking out components. Good Neighbor
Allen was too busy with other things, so I had to do it all myself.
It works wonderfully, and he's *gorgeous*!!!! I named him
"BeastiBoy".
