Yes I'm down here in good ol' North Carolina. Not in my FF capacity, but I
work for the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management (the state
version of FEMA). Just got back yesterday after a week long deployment.
Basically when crap hits the fan, I'm the guy who's coordinating, loading
and shipping food, water, cots, tents, plastic, tarps, toilets, pumps,
generators, etc. to the counties that are impacted out of the western
warehouse (our main one). We have two.

The good thing is that Ophelia didn't do a straight on attack on NC or else
I'd still be out there. The bad thing is she took her sweet time leaving
us. Imagine your house being pelted by 50+mph winds and rain for three to
five days straight with no let up. The beaches took a direct impact and
have in places over 8 feet of beach erosion. Localized flooding and power
outage has happened. Overall, NC was prepared and acted properly during a
natural event.

Actually Mississippi did an excellent job given what they had to deal with;
the full impact of the storm. Louisiana and New Orleans both didn't follow
their own emergency operation plans, nor did FEMA pre-position, nor did
congress help them out since the 1960's when everyone said the levies needed
to be rebuilt stronger.

Well, that and the 1500 sq. miles of missing wetlands lost over that
time period due to "control" of the Mississippi river's normal
meanderings. Enough for a 1 to 2 category drop in case of a high
powered hurricane. But really, what's the chances of such a beast
ever hitting?

DUDE!! {{{{{{{HUGZ!}}}}}}}

I was wondering if you had been sent to New Orleans, but I see
you were needed elsewhere. How is your home? Do you and the wife
need anything?
I've watched all the news about Ophelia and have seen the beaches.

Bottom line- you gotta pop in here more often. Smeggy gave me a
nasty scare and I was worried about y'all, too.
