Old farts need help setting up Tribes 1 server

| You young'uns will prob roll your eyes and all at this old fart,
trying to play such an outdated game. But maybe one of you might help
anyway.
I used to Play Tribes 1 back in 1999, I just found the disc laying
around and loaded it up. Damn, I forgot how much I LOVED this game.
I have a friend who also loved the game and we tried to join some
servers last night, but looks like a lot has changed since we last
played. The new mods and maps and all seem SO complicated. We're
nostaligic for just some basic Broadside games on plain old
Renegades....y'all are probably pointing and laughing at how dated
that is.
But anyway, what we'd like to do is figger out how to just set up our
own little server so we can play against each other. But neither of us
has a clue how to set up a Tribes server (or ANY server for that
matter). He has a laptop w/ a high speed connection and Linux at his
place. Or we could use a spare PC running Windows 2000. Would either
of these work? Do we need some special software or hardware or
something to set up a Tribes server?
Thanks a ton to anyone who helps us old farts!

Man, it's been so long since I messed with Tribes, I don't recall if
there was anything special you needed to run a server, or even what
hardware profile or OS specifications it requires.

Actually, most of use are Tribemen (and Tribeswomen, mir) from the glory
days of T1. Some of us still play (and prefer) the original.

Hon, relax. I'm 52 years old. I LOVE Tribes 1 & 2.
Here's all you have to do: One of you start up Tribes and pay attention
to those opening screens. On one of them you'll see choices such as "Play"
and "Host". Choose "Host", fill in the blanks that the game will ask, then
begin your game.
The other of you can then be sent an email with the name of the server,
and password info. The email recipient then simply finds the server in the
list and joins!
Of course, you two could get together and decide all of this ahead of time.
You could get a third computer into the mix, but if he has a high speed
connection, this will be adequate for the two of you. My husband and I
used to play this way on a dial-up connection, so I know it works.
You need any more help you just holler, okay? I use PCs, but there are
Linux users in here. Have fun!!

There was no Linux server for Tribes 1. Dammit. (If there was, I'd run a
server for it at http://matureasskickers.net/.) Miracle's suggestion is
your best bet. Host on one machine, play on another. Or host on a 3rd if
you don't want to give unfair advantage (zero ping) to the person hosting.
For a team full of old farts:

That's the rub, isn't it?
I'm dying to hear what kind of report she gets from 3DMark2005 or some
other graphical bench mark.

I know, I'm so sorry guys. :o} I've just had some crazy-busy
times lately, plus trying to get more done than I'm capable of.
Same-old, same-old. :D
I promise that I'll start this coming Monday night! I promise!!
I'll tote my little TV into the office and set up my little "camp" at
my desk, instead of this sewing table.
Okay? Plus, I'll set this laptop on one of the pullouts so that if
I bork something I'll still be able to communicate with y'all.
So, starting Monday, start telling me what all y'all want me to do
first on BeastieBoy. I'll load the AV and Spybot over the weekend
and get that out of the way.

It's a program that uses some of the most jawdroppingly stunning visuals
to max out your computer. It can do this even to your latest greatest.
It will then tell you how deficient your computer it at running it
(higher scores mean your system is less deficient).

No, not at all. Like something that provides a test of your GUI.
http://www.3dmark.com is a place that supposedly offers eye-candy
tests for your GUI to choke on, everything on full, highly detailed
scenes... then reports back a score in "3D Marks". My computer cannot
handle 3DMark05. It handles 3DMark03 with relative ease.
But then, I'm trying to get the best use out of an ATI Radeon 9550
here.
Your card should give you some interesting scores.

Go to www.3dmark.com and download the 03 and 05 flavors and run the
default benchmark tests.
Then post the scores so I can weep.

Ooh, this looks interesting. I'll be sure to do this right away.
I was telling Ross today that I'll be moving my wee TV into the office
tomorrow so that I can settle in there at night to play with my BeastieBoy.
Then *he* started giving me shit for letting it just sit there! LOL
I told him the reason I was settling in there was because of the posts
you guys just wrote! :D
He laughed out loud and said "Good! They *should* be giving you shit!"
Sheesh, a gal just can't sit & knit anymore, huh? ;)
