I am guessing that what you don't see from the pictures of the tree tops, is
how thick the canopy of leaves and branches used to be. From my memory of
going to Monroe the canopy was very thick and only letting a little sun
light in.

That, and the missing Spanish moss. I didn't see any at all.
This time of year it would have been thick and lush. Maybe I'll
go back and look more closely.

One thing I noticed in the pictures is someone needs a little more sun
on their legs. My god, those are almost as white as mine.

It certainly did clear out most of the canopy. I was amazed by the
change in the "skyline" (for lack of a better word).

If another one were to ride in along the same track as Katrina, it
would have far less ground resistance and be more devastating even with
the exact same winds, just because there isn't the resistance at ground
level that there was for Katrina.

I never claimed to be anything more than a pasty-white geek with a
monitor tan. Which is why that area of the country is hell for me.
Everything they love to do down there is tied to being outside...
hunting, fishing, drinking in a boat.

Outside is to be avoided at all cost. Everything I love to do is tied
to a roof, at least 4 walls, air conditioning and high speed internet
access.

The nice thing about having legs this white is that I can read by them
at night.

Tropical storm Ophelia is threatening to develop into a full-blown
hurricane. That's not the bad news- the computer models predict her
path would be almost the exact same as Katrina.
Surely the gods wouldn't be so cruel.

I wondered today if IcyHot is down there, in his firefighting capacity.
Anyone know?

Firefighters in LO are exhausted to the point of uselessness, and there
is a lot of work to do.

FEMA immediately mobilized about a thousand firefighters, who were told
to bring backpacks, sleeping bags, first-aid kits and Meals Ready to Eat
(whatever they are). These are some of the best folks out there, and
would be a major boon to the ongoing efforts.

But FEMA wouldn't have its reputation if it did things right:

MRE's are self-contained ration packets. Enough to keep you alive.

I heard reports that some of the people that were issued these rations
in the wake of Katrina were complaining about them. Personally, if it
meant that or starvation, I'd take the MRE's.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, Frank. You cannot fathom the
complete and utter confusion that is running amok in our federal
agencies. Each day another horror story emerges on the utter
incompetence that is seemingly unending.
As strangers, friends, and families take in former New Orleans
residents, and many thousands sit in shelters, hundreds and hundreds
of trailer homes (mobile homes) sit outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
Those trailers belong to FEMA. They are "emergency housing
units". Yet they are still sitting in Georgia.

I would go on, but I'd only get madder than hell all over again
for about the fourth time today. This fiasco will be the single greatest
tradgedy that has affected the US. *Ever*.

I just can't convey to you in words how angry and horrified I am
with our entire federal government. One lone exception would be our
armed forces- they jumped in with both feet and got things done before
FEMA even knew what the hell was going on.
(The best and fastest help came from ordinary citizens, both with
church affiliations and without, and the Salvation Army. The Red Cross
has its head so far up its XXX it couldn't pull it out with both hands.)

Shit. FEMA still doesn't know what the hell is going on, or what to
do about it.

I gotta hush, and calm down again.

I think the state officials in Louisiana can share quite a bit of the blame
as I have heard they were very slow to respond. One thing we have set in
motion is this thing called states rights, and beneficially so in most
instances. We don't want the feds having free reign. It takes time to
mobilize any type of operation, but from what I have read it was up to the
governor to start that ball rolling and she sat on her hands. The Red Cross
came before the storm and wanted to set up around outside of New Orleans in
preparation and were held back. Rolling hospitals sitting miles from where
they are needed because of red tape at the state level. We all know too
well FEMA's past, but I think the blame here can be spread around quite a
bit more for the lull in efforts.

Excuse me, but the Red Cross was specifically told not to come to the area.

Stupid, but true.
quote:

The director of FEMA's previous occupation was managing an Arabian Horse
club, picking judges and such. He was forced to resign over gross
stupidity. So he got picked up in Bush' campaign, and so into FEMA
(where he replaced that guy who DID have relevant experience).

It's amazing. Michael Moore is just sitting there with a despondent look
on his face because he can't lie about a single thing to make it look
worse than it is (as with _Bowling for Columbine_ and whatever his
latest was again). If you put this out as a book a few years from now,
it's going to read like bad, contrived fiction.

You speak the truth, I can't deny it. But at this late date, FEMA still
isn't getting a handle on the mess. And the Red Cross refused truckloads
of bottled water. Told the owner of the water & trucks to take it back,
that they (the Red Cross) would *buy* it.
Meanwhile, the Salvation Army was set up and feeding folks.

What a schmozzle.

The farther away you send your money (in terms of levels of bureacracy),
the more gets taken off the top before it gets a chance to do what they
claim they're taking it for, and the less accountable the system becomes.
There's no reason the Fed needs anything but a tiny fraction of its current
budget. Local agencies should either be trusted to do what's needed, or we
shouldn't trust government at all.

Without various levels of government roadblock, the private sector (both
charitable and for-profit) could roll in unimpeded and start cleaning up
the mess.

Hopefully this will help wean people off the idea that government is a
panacea, but I doubt it.

I'm experiencing the ineptitude first hand, Miracle. We're on the phone
with FEMA now because their system blocked and denied our assistance
claim because the DSL connection I was on dropped. The solution is to
contest it via writting in a snail-mail letter. Which will put off my
"Disaster Unemployment Assistance", meaning I'll have extreme
difficulty as our funds rapidly dwindle.

Not to complain, though, our friend is willing to house us as long as
need be. But he's in his 50's. A bachelor and a very particular
Englishman. Having two kids, aged 4 and 1 who are in a situation they
don't understand... they can be difficult for my wife and I to put up
with. So I can imagine the pressure we must be putting on him.

I hear that!

America is geared towards helping other countries at the moment;
deploying aid abroad. I don't think we have the communication between
agencies and infrastructure to get things done as well within our own
borders. Hopefully the Kat aftermath will help bring that to an end.

If New Orleans needed some killin', now we'd have been able to get
troops, bombers and 'copters there so fast it would've been shocking
and awe inspiring. Shock'n'awe! Sounds like an Indian Tribe, dunnit?

We got a $2,000 deposit in our banking account. So all is not lost.
Evidently they're aware of the issues people are having with their
site and giving the displaced a direct deposit where they know the
banking info.

So, even though their computers pooped us back for "multiple claims",
evidently they're taking accidental droppage into consideration.

I was reading where, since the French Quarter will be open for
business in 90 days. That's *the* tourist attraction and the city's
bread and butter.

Sure, they could focus on getting the crime-ridden, animal-filled
slums up and running in 90 days, but how's that going to help get the
city back on its feet? ;P

My uncle-in-law said things weren't so bad for him in Chalmette. When
he left his house, there was only 12 inches of standing water... in
his attic! Always the optimist that guy.

He stayed the storm too. But he had put a chainsaw in his attic,
should he get trapped there. From what I understand, not all of the
ones who decided to stay were as forethinking.

How on earth could anyone consider going to the French quarter
and plan on partying? It strikes me as too ghoulish for words. I know
I wouldn't be able to consider it until quite awhile after the very last
funeral.
I understand the need to resume business, but I think Mardi Gras
next year is soon enough to consider "letting the good times roll" again.
That's almost 6 months, so perhaps. But I won't be there. Ever.

up," but carried on the following conversation anyway:

No pissin' in New Orleans! They're trying to get toxic wastewater OUT
of the city.

We need Maetryx down there to draw pictures of their dirty, um, dirt,

I said nothing to Smeggy because I assumed he was referring only to the
city, NOT the people. I didn't care for New Orleans either, so I related
to what he said. I was there in 1985, and have never returned. Just didn't
appeal to me.

I did get a free meal there, however. Too long to type out properly
tonight, but the short version is that everyone's food arrived but mine,
the manager cracked wise, I whispered in his ear "XXXX you and the
horse you rode in on", and my meal, when it eventually arrived, was
comped.

*That* was a fun dinner. ;)
