| What a rush!
I'm in Arlington, TX, using a friends laptop and dialup connection to
write this.
Sticking around for Katrina... not really up there on the
Smart-o-Meter. That's for sure. I'm fine. My family's fine. My house is
fine. My in-law's house is fine.
All told, there was no point during the storm I felt in dire peril.
However, the aftermath is a bugger.
First thing I did when I got into the DFW metroplex was get my GSM
phone's SIM card swapped out to a local (Texas) number. We're not going
back. Well, not to live there anyway.
For the past 2 years I'd been struggling finacially with unstable IT
contracts that only last for weeks sometimes. So my wife and I are
moving back to the big T for good.
There is nothing left of New Orleans. At least, not for us. The place
is devastated. And the funny thing is that being in Slidell right after
the storm, you're in a total informmation vacuum. No news. No phones.
No cell phones. No television... nothing.
Which is why I'm driving back tonight to get my in-laws out. They are
under the impression things will be back to normal within a month.
It wasn't until I got into our hotel room and took a very welcome
shower and plopped down on the bed with my two daughters and wife that
I was able to view some of the devastation.
You don't get the impression that things are that bad right at, for
lack of a better term, ground zero. (Forgive the utilization of an
overused phrase)
My wife's parents' have no idea what kind of suffering is going on all
around them. Slidell, at least the part we were in, got off relatively
light. When we left, they were talking about "when the power's restored
in a few days..." and "we'll just pile the branches here by the curb
for when they come for pick-up..."
My wife's a wreck having seen the whole picture and what we've left
them in. But we were as naive and uninformed as they were. So I'm
driving back tonight with my brother-in-law to convince them of the
massive scale of things. There's nothing there for them. At least not
for the next few weeks.
I think my mother-in-law is afraid they'll be looted if they leave.
Know what? That's a very high probability. But with no gas, electricity
and water, and with pestilance mounting, what's a few material
possesions in light of health and continued life?
Frank, can Holland spare of few of those famous water-retaining
lesbians y'all are so famous for? You know, the ones that Dutch kid was
famous for sticking his finger into? What a perverted country!

Of relief.

Alas, we've lost one of our own deliciously perverted cities, at least for
awhile.
Glad to hear you're ok.

has the big picture at this point. They are calling Katrina possibly
the third worst hurricane to hit the states on record back to 1851.

How can they be like that? I am no where near the storms and I'm being
effected. Refineries and rigs got XXXXed, hard, and they are saying 2
months till those are gonna be back up. Because of that gas prices shot up
atleast 60 cents overnight, and climbing higher and higher by the hour. My
point is, if a multibillion dollar industry is saying it'll be months
before they can get back to work, what chance does anyone else have to be
back to normal quickly.

We watched the NBC Dateline special awhile ago, and no one
has gotten very far inland yet, over in Mississippi. It's going to take
several more days to get a true picture of the full extent of the damage,
I bet.
And goodness knows how long it will be before New Orleans
proper can be "un-flooded".
Donating to the Red Cross is all Ross & I can do these days.
Ten years ago we'd be down there, volunteering. But we're not
exactly fit anymore......
Anyone else feel like a 10-ton weight was lifted off their chest
when Smeggy posted?

Hon, you gotta remember that they're cut off from the world.
They have no TV, no phones, and most likely no radio. They
aren't seeing what we are on TV.

Miracle, chill.
As I said, initial deathtollwas posted as 50 in New Orleans itself, most
devastation around the coasts. He'd already said he'd be in higher
ground, in a house not made of straw or sticks, further away from the coast.
While he was, of course, in a risk zone, the odds of him surviving the
thing without harm or injury were damn near certain.
Good news that he's alright of course, but it wasn't like we were
dredging for his corpse when he popped back in here.
I just don't worry easily, and always approach things from the positive
end.

With all due respect for you, Frank, I shall speak to the cretin
known as DEbig3 as I please.
And I will not apologize for, or attempt to explain, my deep
concern for Smeggy and his family. I will, however, disagree with
the cavalier (imo) position that there was no need for worry.

| We're all okay and I'm now on a friends DSL connection and my own
computer in a north Dallas neighborhood.
My in-laws are out. My kids are fine and everything will work out.
But, man... am I EXHAUSTED. I'm dehydrated and spent the night puking
and dry heaving. Don't know why. I figure it's because I've hit the
limit of my endurance. My ribs and abs are going to be sore tomorrow
just from my stomach trying to turn itself inside out.
I haven't slept soundly since Saturday, the 27th of August. 1 hour

| I've been wanting to move back. My wife didn't really want to. And it
only took the destruction of our small town and New Orleans to get her
to see things my way.
| |
| Smeghead 2005-09-02, 8:35 pm |
| They were, as I was, totally isolated communicatively. Absolutely NO
information other than rumor and what you see with your own eyes.
With a tree across every street, movement is very restricted. In some
cases you have to drive up and through peoples yards, leaving heavy
ruts through what WAS a nicely manicured lawn last week.
So, if you're in the middle of it, your world is only as far as you can
see. You're not aware of "refineries and rigs". You know your street
looks like a forest fell on it. You know your house has a tree
bisecting it. Or the roof was lifted off. Or your tree toppeled and
crushed your neighbors shed.
It's a complete vacuum. And you only know what is tangible at the
moment.
It wasn't until I got out of the area and into a hotel room that I was
able to get a sense of the scope of things. My in-laws are New Oleans
natives. They'd had storms like that before. Betsy in '65. Things
turned around fairly quickly. So, being in an infovacuum, they had to
rely on previous experience, which told them that within 2 weeks,
things would be back up and normal.
Everyone here is probably a little more aware of the world as a whole
than the average person. We're wired. We use the internet. We share
information. I've never experienced a communications blackout like that
before. The storm was nothing compared to the after effects. Ignorance
is NOT bliss.

Quakes, for the most part, are passe, too. But every once in awhile you get
a doozy. So far we haven't had one that cuts off communication, but that
last big one broke the Bay Bridge and left everyone commuting between
Oakland and San Francisco by ferry for a year. Now they're trying to build
a complete replacement for the bridge, but as is typical with a government
job, they've totally botched the budget and the whole thing is stalled for
funds. Reminds me far too much of the New Orleans levees.
But not to worry, we can continue to feel safe at the airports as all that
Homeland "Security" pays for TGA employees to feel us up and take our nail
clippers away. That's a *much* more important use of tax dollars!

Its TSA, not TGA. They don't take away the clippers anymore. You know
whats really XXXXed about the TSA is that they aren't allowed to talk
about any of the stuff they do, so people who's only experiences have been
over the piddly dink shit form an opinion thats all they do. Also,
congress keeps cutting back and doing shit to purposely make them fail.
Originally they had 6 people working each lane; someone loading the
luggage into the Xray machine, someone running the Xray, Person working
the metal detector, someone handling luggage search if the Xray turned up
anything, a supervisor assisting where needed, and someone keeping watch
on the security cameras to make sure no one is trying to sneak around them
and such. Then congress said the supervisors cannot assist, they just have
to make sure the others are working. Now they decided to cut number of
agents on each lane down to 3, which means one person has to load the
Xray, watch the xray, then do luggage search if needed, another runs the
metal detector and searches people if needed, and the supervisor who isnt
allowed to do anything. There is also talks of knocking it down to two,
and they've announced that a lane can be properly run by only one person.
Can you imagine the lines at the airport over that? Not to mention, the
greater chance of error since they are taking on more and more tasks.
Basically, the democrats are pissy because it was an idea thought of by
the republicans, and so they are making a big political thing over it and
trying to cut away as much as possible as well as devaluing it in the
public's eye to make sure it fails so they can go "I told you so". Do
people outside of TSA know about the training in explosives, the
terrorists who have been stopped, the death threats, attempts to kidnap
and impersonate TSA agents, etc? XXXX no. Cock sucking bureaucrats.

| Two little girls. 4 and 1 years of age. Almost only had a 1 year old.
Right about the time I posted the beginning of this thread from my
other friend's house, my daughter, Kate, got ahold of a Coke bottle
with a purple liquid in it.
She was coughing and gagging and my wife and I couldn't figure what was
wrong. Then she got really lethargic.
Our friends are a couple without children, so their place is NOT
childproofed.
Anyway, before I took off on my bleary-eyed 2nd trip between NO and DFW
it went something like this:
Allison: "I saw her drink this and took it away from her."
Hasty questioning of our hosts as to the contents.
Lamp oil or something. You stick a wick in and light it.
Emergency room.
Wait.
Impatient barking at woman behind counter. "Is this shit prioratized in
any way?! I think my daughter has been poisoned!"
Asked to wait.
Demand number for Poison Control.
Wrong number given.
Jump strait to 911 via cellphone in emergency waiting room.
PC calls hospital and make direct demand to see my kid.
Short wait.
Bloodpressure, heart rate, respiration monitor hookup.
Chest x-ray.
Wait.
Everything looks fine.
Observation.
Everything looks fine.
Release.
Long-assed road trip.
Gather the old ones.
Long-assed road trip back.
Extreme exhaustion and dehydration.

It's alright, I plonked him so I won't keep poking him with a
sharp stick. I figure the way my luck goes, in real life he's Smeggy's
brother, or brother-in-law, so better to stop before I piss off everyone.
Besides, my energy is better directed at relief efforts for those
affected by Katrina. We Yumans collected $64,000 on Thursday.

Man. Read the whole page, then emailed the dude to thank
him for his good deed. If PayPal doesn't issue a public apology
to him, I will terminate my relationship with both PayPal and eBay.
(And tell them why.)

No Adrian, I'm too mad to speak to him. I'd rather spend

The bigger the numbers get, the more I realize how much
