| Here is a place to start to show how far your money will go. I think this
would be a decent system upgrade for you. Those of you familiar with AMD
please look and make suggestions.

Must put a decent HSF on there. The problem being I'm not sure what will
fit on that MB. They have gotten better at that, making it so that you
don't have too many problems with caps and all, but you still have to be
careful.
I'd also throw a decent sized drive in there, say 120 gigs atleast. They
aren't too expensive.

I think Miracle just recently snagged a hard drive though. I also assume
she has CD/DVD reader/burner that she can use in the build. Are you saying
the stock heat sink/fan provided by AMD does not suffice? I am pretty sure
I used the boxed edition that comes with heat sink/fan already. But, as I
alluded to, I am not an AMD man....yet.

"Cooling Device- None. Processor only."
I've got my secondary HD in use, and it's big enough, at 40 gigs,
but I think I'd get a 60 gig for basic ops in the new machine. Then
add my 40 gig later, as it's my workhorse for graphics and photos.
I have all of it backed up on CDs, but it's such a PITA to sort
thru discs. I'd rather keep all my collection on one drive, where I
can hunt a single graphic with no sweat (I've got a very detailed filing
system set up). Oh, that 40 gigs is over half used. I collect a LOT.
:D
I think the original HD is a 30 gig, but it may be a 20.
(And I'm too lazy to go look right now....LOL)

"Monster" is an apt description!! Holy shit.
All things considered, I'll wait for the Seagate or Maxtor
model to debut. I dunno about Hitachi.

Stay away from Maxtor. They suck. And when I say suck I really mean they
really really really suck XXXXing monkey cocks. Seagate or WD is the way
to go.

Verily much agreed!
Maxtor blows donkey chode. We had gotten a bunch of new computers in
at Navo in the Telemetry department long before I got there. So there
was a trouble ticket for a dead drive on one of them. So I was
swapping it out for a larger Seagate drive.
One of the techs that had been there years before me saw that I was
swapping out a drive on one of these machines and raised a brow and
came over. "Dead drive?" Yeah. "It's a XXXXin' Maxtor, right?" Yep!
"Sons o' bitches shoulda been yanked and replaced from day one.
Nothing but trouble."
Then he goes on to tell me that within 3 months of them receiving
these machines, the drives began to fail. They just began to replace
them with Seagates and evidently the one I was replacing was one that
had managed to last a whole year and a half! Most of them had been
replaced already.
Avoid Maxtor.
I personally like Western Digital. But that's just me.

Either or here, just anything but Maxtor. And if you have an old IBM
Deathstar...
I've had a few Maxtors crap out on me with very little time on them what
so ever. I had a 30gig that I had used maybe for 2 months tops crap out
recently, and a couple of 10s. I stopped buying them years ago though
because of all the headaches I've heard about while on a local IRC
channel that is mostly comp.sci/IT people (besides me I think there might
be 2 other people on the channel that don't work in IT, maybe 3, and one
of them works for a cable company. Oh, there is the guy that works for
OTIS, the elevator/escalator company). They are always rma'ing Maxtors,
and with my own limited experience, I stopped buyint them.

Would I be correct in assuming you were the victim of a raunchy
Maxtor drive in the past? ;)

Damn. Seems like Maxtor is the Edsel of hard drives!

With Maxtor, you get one of two things. Utter shit, or a great drive. No
inbetween. I have a maxtor here that has never given me any fits, however
I know of some that are bad. Personally, I prefer Western Digital.

Same here as far as drive preference. Western Digital.
I guess if Maxtor were consistently bad, we wouldn't be talking about
them.
But then, some people drink Meister Brau.

Likewise on the either/or thing. I've had one Maxtor fail in 10 years
of using them. I've heard mostly bad things from others, but I've
never been unsatisfied with my decision to use Maxtor. Just lucky, I
guess.
