Origins of Skiing?
|
|
| Tommy Li 2005-06-21, 12:33 am |
| Is there some story about the origins of skiing? Was there a progenitor
that started skiing in the Tribes community? Even if it's just myth, I'd
like to hear it. Having joined the mass of Tribesplayers a few years
after the release of Tribes-1, I'm intensely curious.

There may be stories out there about who the very first person to ski was,
but who is really to know. It was discovered in the first Tribes that if
you jumped continuously while going down a hill that you would pick up
speed. It was not really a bug or exploit, but rather an
undiscovered/unintended feature. It caught on quickly and eventually
scripts were released that would spare the punishment on your spacebar by
repeating the jumping simply by holding it down. It became part of the
essence of tribes and was incorporated as a feature in Tribes 2 and
Vengeance.

| The origins of skiing are a mystery shrouded in myth, wrapped up in
religious dogma. For a time, it was believed that Zeno of Elatia was
the one who discovered skiing in his quest for the absolute plenum of
pure 'Eleatic Being'. Other philosophers such as Democratus took note
but refuted that skiing was not possible in reality but only possible
in thought, giving rise to the belief that skiing was not even real.
Epicurean beliefs took shape: skiing could not be understood and that
life was a thing to just be "gotten on" with, without worrying about
some ancient ritual known as skiing.
However it was from an Epicurean who theorised that skiing "for the
most part (Latin: Plerumque)" took place whilst repeatedly pressing the
space bar.
Such a connection was not hard to have made and the theory was finally
proven 2000 years later when the so called bug was discovered by one of
the Tribes 1 devs during development. Upon the release of the original
Tribes the Golden Era of skiing began with the invention of the skiing
script, making an everyday chore fun! Soon after in what is known as
the Silver Era of skiing, Tribes 2 was released without need of a
skiing script. Nonetheless, skiing became a rudimentary task, lacking
grace or skill. I refer to it as skill to mean the magnitude of the
velocity of the warrior. And hence, as time drew on and as the Golden
Era passed away the art of skiing was eventually lost from when the
arrival of the third Tribes game redesigned the physical principles of
skiing originally decided upon by religion 2000 years before by
eliminating friction completely from the plane and the particle. This
new design paradigm proved to be unpopular hence destroying the art of
skiing forever.

I heard that Picabo Street. and Suzy "Chapstick" Chaffee slept with
the Dev Team in order to get skiing put into the game unheralded so
that only they would have an edge over other players.

True. Sad, but true. Our current American culture
is *so* messed up, as far as priorities. I shudder to
think how many books will be sold.

So I'm not the only one to notice the "deer in headlights" stare? At
first I thought it was just a one-off. But when every photo has the
same "I-can-see-your-molecular-structure" wild-eyed stare...
She just LOOKS psycho.

Yes, she does. Now I wonder if she has thyroid trouble-
seems protruding eyes are a sign of hyperthyroidism. But in
the bits of news coverage, I can't tell if they are just open
very wide, or if they protrude.

Even more sad- that so very few here know anything
about the Downing Street Memo.
The world is indeed a screwed up place. Except for
you guys in here. Even Biggie is normal as compared to
some "normal" folks elsewhere.
Now *that's* frightening, eh? LOL

Yow! I never thought of it before, but I'd rather have him for Prez than
the jokers running for the old parties lately.

I've got a great mental picture of Biggie sitting behind the desk
in the Oval Office when some piece of crap legislation reaches him.
He mutters "XXXXtards" as he shitcans it into the ole Round File.
WTF *is* DEbig3, anyway?

is f*ed up," but carried on the following conversation anyway:

I hear *that*. I couldn't be President because I'd probably
shoot all the Senators and such during the first week. Tell *ME*
"No"?!?!?
I don't *think* so. ;)
