Weird. I wonder why he was landing with ordinance from a "training"
mission? *4* bombs?! If it's a training mission where you don't shoot,
wouldn't it make more sense to carry dummy loads? And if it's a shooting
mission, why did he still have them as he was landing?

The Harrier's a cool jet, though. I saw a show on them on Discovery or
History Channel showing how the flight controls work. There's a big
lever in the cockpit to control the angle of the engine exhaust duct
over about 120 degrees (straight back to slightly forward of down). When
hovering, some exhaust is ducted out through "puffer" ports at bow,
stern, and wing tips to provide attitude control.

I try to fly them in the Battlefield games (BF1942's Desert Combat Final
mod and the recent Battlefield2 demo) but still haven't got the hang of
the hover.

In BF2 it's an F22.

Which is even cooler!

Because ground crews need training too, in realistic circumstances.
Besides the fact that you'd want your pilots feeling comfortable with
high explosives underneath their butts.

Well, it's been a wild time- the crash was about 1/4 of a mile
from AnnieMae's house, as the crow flies. Scared the living dogshit
outta me when the local news broke into whatever was on the TV
to say an AV-8B had plopped down behind the older of the two
WalMarts. Annie lives diagonally across Pacific Avenue from it.

It's WTI time again- Weapons and Tactical Instruction exercises
are in full swing, and this Harrier was returning from just such a mission
when the engine apparently blew out. (Which is why the jet still had
unexploded ordnance aboard- maybe he had troubles with the target
or something. Ordinarily, these jets do not have live ammo onboard.)

Several eyewitnesses said there was a sudden spray of sparks from
the jet, then it fell oddly silent. Then the cockpit blew and the pilot was
ejected. Then the jet spiraled straight down.

Now, you must see where exactly this thing managed to crash- it's
amazing. It hit right at the jucture of 4 yards, where the block walls met
in a " + ". Most of the jet splashed down into a swimming pool that was
in one the corners of the yards right at the corner of the wall.

The lone woman inside was awakened by the splashing pool water
coming in through her bedroom window. Then the jet exploded, having
dumped a hell of a lot of jet fuel into the pool.

Somehow the 4 500-pounders remained unexploded, but part of the
300 rounds of .25 caliber cannon ammo did not. Those rounds started
going off, and that's when the folks with video cameras hightailed it outta
the area.

What a mess of confusion reigned supreme here for awhile- our
pitiful news crew tried their best to get their collective shit together,
but they really were like mice in a maze trying to find the cheese.

We didn't find out until late last night about the dangerous carbon
fibers that were airborne, and that should have been brought out much
sooner. Annie was terrified today mostly because she couldn't get the
information she needed. Being on oxygen 24/7/365, everything in the
atmosphere is of critical concern for her. Wee amounts of dust can
produce a nasty lung infection, so you can imagine how upset she was
about the lack of information on those carbon fibers.

Ever since the base changed the landing and takeoff approaches,
I've said they'll change it back after a residential crash. Let's see if
they'll wise up and do it.

I think if a jet crashed in my backyard, threw the contents of a swimming
pool through my bedroom window, blew up, and the cannon ammo started
cooking off, I'd leave a yellow stain, too! ;)

Most bombs and missiles have to be armed before they'll go boom, otherwise
the part that makes them explode is kept away from it. They do it for
reasons just like this. the ammunition however does not. Smack the primer
and it goes. (also, its 25mm, not .25. There's a huge difference)

Actually, I was. From the time I was 2 till was almost 15 I was raised at
my family's gunshop. When I was little, my favorite thing was to goto the
range when the cops where practicing for qualifications and piss them off
by outshooting them (by a large margin, like they're lucky to hit the
paper and I'm having a single ragged hole on the X)

The bombs *were* armed. What saved the day was the way
they landed- these particular bombs must hit nose-first to detonate,
and the 4 on the jet did not.
And okay, the ammo was 25mm. Sheesh, cut me some slack
when I'm stressed out!!

Read up on the newest bombs and ammo- it's a different world
out there since the Persian Gulf war.

Uhm, like a factor of 4?

But now you have me wondering how big the whole round is, like length,
mass, and propellant. Sounds like something you wouldn't want to drop on
your foot!

I know where you were around guns. Remember, I'm from St. Louis and
have been to Arnies a time or two.

The 25mm is the diameter of the projectile itself, and its overall length
is 137mm. The .25ACP's dimensions is 6.35x15mm, or in its cusomary
measurement, .25"x.59". As I said, quite a large bit of difference, more
than a scale of 4.

Oops, was thinking linear. So with 4 times the radius and 8 times the
length, it's got about 4x4x8 = 128 times the volume and mass. Yeah, a
teensy bit more than 4. ;)
