I'm from Missouri, my wife's from Louisiana. I said that Salmon is
pronounced without the "l" like samon. She calls it Salmon, like it's
spelled, L and all.

So, I hop onto the trusty internet to get a definitive answer. Turns
out her way of saying it is closer to the Italian way, and my way is
very French.

It also turns out that the Dutch call it Zalm.

I tell ya, those Dutch... it's like they have a different word for
EVERYTHING!

Oh yeah Mr Smartass, then how come Merriam Webster's shows the "l" not
being pronounced either? They even have a sound clip

LOL, wasn't being a smartass, light bub is how "I" pronounce it. I was

Simple. Pronounced as a man's name and last initial-
Sam N. From the Latin: "salmo".

True Southerners, however, turn it into a *3* syllable word.

"sayah men"

Indeed. Zalm is also our Minister of Finance.

His name, that is, not his title.

I've got a "word" for you, homie.

"Poffertjes"

Which, the following site has told me, is "fritters" in English.
Although, looking at pictures, I can tell you right now that that is
incorrect.

My hometown, with pictures! I don't know most places. That big tower
is the New Church, built between the 1300's and the 1500's. The Old
Church founded around the mid 1200's is a few 'blocks' walk.

Neat site.

Ah, Europe. Where the history is from.

You have standing, functional structures older than this whole
country. Amazing. Everything here is considered "old" when it's over
30 years old. Nothing is really built to last here.

Yup, yes, and damn straight.

I like old cities.

Most old Dutch cities have city centers that are hundreds of years old,
with some parts being much older. Rotterdam is mostly new construction,
due to WW2 (got bombed to shit first, then got 'renovated' after the war
by people who realized you could tip over medieval buildings next to the
rubble without anyone noticing) but lots of cities have old cores.

Delft is about 760 years old now, so that kinda counts as old.

Typically when a Leftpondian is told about the "New Church" being from
the 14th century, they start joking about "Where's the 'old' church". So
we point them to it and let them have a nice day.

How much does such a house cost? Wood and paneling is cheap. I wonder what
the ratio of home ownership per capita in lower income brackets is between
our two countries? It's probably dropping fast here, though, with the
enactment of much higher building standards that raise the prices out of
the reach of most.

Exactly. Wood framing, with a shell of plywood, insulating board and
siding. Very temporary. Yet, very expensive at the same time.

According to the census, the average American family moves every 7
years. So we're a very mobile society. I know in the past 6 years I've
lived in Missouri, Texas and then in Louisiana.

The impetus for mobility? For me? Love and money.

Well, housing cost depends heavily on where you live, even in our little
country. If you live in the Randstad (Edge City, literal translation)
you're looking at more expensive housing. Delft is pretty damn
expensive, with about 110k-140k for a basic, small appartment. You can
get a fairly large appartment or small row-house for that in the eastern
parts of the country, if you stick to the rural areas.

Rotterdam and The Hague are both cheaper than Delft, in general, and my
brother got a good deal on a POS small (55m^2) appartment for 60k.
Totally renovated it, is probably worth about 80-100k now.

I got tickled at Scratch's remark about wood being cheap.
Here in the desert, it's horribly expensive. Homes are built using
the least amount of framing possible, then covering it with tar
paper, chicken wire, and finally stucco.
Attics are rare, as they trap heat and use more lumber.

Oh how I miss the red brick from home! I'd love to have
enough money to build a big brick home here, like the ones
