I saw the post your bro made in the clipart group-
please ask him to also post his files as either a .jpg or
..jpeg for those who are program-challenged!

So many folks in there use only one graphics proggie,
and an odd file name throws them for a loop, me included.
(Most of us regulars are over fifty, by the way.)

What did he post as? Png or SVG? (Png's whoop XXX over jpeg, think Jpeg's
with the ability for transparencies, and SVG's are vector files which can
be scaled up to any size you want without having loss of quality)

.... and don't forget, png's still aren't widely accepted as the de-facto
image fileformat.

Oh, and JPG's still beat PNG's on terms of filesize. Dunno about PNG's
capability of storing textual data though, but JPG's happily do that
anyway.

Transparency? Huh... I'd rather have a reminder of what shutter/aperture
speed I used for $PHOTOGRAPH.

True for photographs. Not true for artificial images. PNG is really a
replacement for GIF, not JPEG. JPEG's value is in lossy compression of
images with lots of unique colors.

Put like that, it is about time the GIF format was superceded.

Png's however are still widely used. Hell, even the version of Paint that
comes with XP supports reading and saving Png's. Png's sometimes can be
larger (depends on the settings and such), but in my experience, there is
far lesser loss than with jpeg's.

As far as the transparency, png's support having an alpha channel for
doing transparencies and such like gif's do, but since its an alpha
channel, its allowed to be a gradient transparency (unlike gif which only
did one color and make that transparent)

Most in there use either .png (PSP) or .csv (Photoshop)
for vector files.

I agree wholeheartedly! Alas, too many "serious" graphic
collectors/creators think they MUST have a "professional" vector
format.
What a bunch of bullshit- most of the folks are like me,
middle-aged hobbyists. They only want vector files so they
can alter a file a little and then call it their own! Or use PSP
on it to make it "sparkle"! Oh gag me with a pitchfork........

Ow, my head hurts......... But it's true. The "new" png's are
becoming more wisespread thanks to XP and the new Paint.

I'll settle for that explanation. :/

I use svg for vector, because its a wide spread format for doing
pure vector drawing. CorelDRAW, Sodipodi, Inkscape, Illustrator, etc all
should open it, and I think PSD and PSP have some support for it. Also
some of the other formats I've used were really piss poor about file size
and quality that they saved at.
