| I'm having blue fits here- I've spent all afternoon and
part of the evening moving about the laptop and/or the
wireless 'modem' thingie, and this is the first time it connected.
I dare not move either now- I'm typing with my arms fully
extended across one of my crafting tables to reach the XXXXing
keyboard.
All of this shit because I thought I'd be more comfortable
gaming at the dining room table. As soon as I moved the laptop
about 2:00pm it refused to even see the network. And NO, I
did not turn off the wireless switch (Fn + F2).
*~XXXX~*!!!!!
I'm in a direct line with the 'modem', with only one wooden
door in the way. Further, I'm basically back to the spot where
I've been each evening, except that I have this shoved back as
far as it will go to the back of the table.
What in pluperfect hell can I do to either increase the range
or connection strength or *what-XXXXing-evah*?
I am royally pissed with this laptop tonight. Can you tell?
Meeeeeeooowwwwrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Ah, the joys of wireless. It's kind of like your cellphone, you may
experience dead spots.
"Can you hear me now?"
Anyway, is it not seeing the network at all, or just not able to
connect to it? You should see some indication of the signal strength
in the task bar (lower right corner).
If you're getting a Signal Strength: Excellent or Good, there's
something with your authentication to the network. Either the good
neighbor just needs to reset the WAP or he's changed the WEP key,
which I don't think someone sharing a connection would do without
informing the affected parties. Unless you used his toilet and forgot
to flush or something...
If you're getting no signal at all, then the WAP is either dead or
simply offline. But since you posted this message, it's most likely a
problem with signal strength. I know you can buy high gain antenna
that extend the signal distance. Something like this...

Both happened, actually. Part of the time the network
wasn't visible. When it *was*, the laptop wouldn't connect
to it.

LOL No, the key's the same.

He's done that already! The two desktops are working like
the proverbial "raped apes", but this laptop is having fits. Once
again tonight, I'm reaching far across my table to access the
keyboard- I was too afraid to move it once it connected!
You know my history- tHE qUEEN oF vOODOO cOMPUTING.
