Author I'm Using An Unsecured Network!
Miracle Smith

2005-05-21, 8:34 pm

No crap- I saw that a nearby network was unsecured
and had a green bar, so I connected my laptop through
some stranger's network!

Allen just left, having set up our two desktops to his
DSL, so all three of our home computers are up and flying
on his network, which *is* encrypted.

This is just wild......I wonder which neighbor has this
network set up.............

I'll log off of it now, though, just to be safe. Is there any
reason to worry?

not really any issue.

its nothing to worry about, as long as you're not snooping on their
computers. But whoring their connection? all's fair. Use it for
torrents and shit, and don't cripple your connection

Cool! But I felt guilty, and then I wondered if the "host"
could find me and snoop into my machine. Worrisome. :D

Can they? Certainly. Will they? Very unlikely. Most people that
have an unsecured wireless access point don't even realize that others
can tap in to it. Almost as if they think the wireless "stuff" stops
traveling at the walls to the house. I have intentionally left my
access point open. Occasionally, people use my internet connection.
I do monitor it, and always scan systems on my network. But I assure
you I'm in the minority on this, but a large margin.

Yeah, I'm locked down on my wireless, MAC addy, ssid isn't broadcast, and
WEP 128 bit incryption. Just to be safe Might be because I know
people that wardrive.

I'd like to, but your average WAP puts the wireless stuff on the wrong side
of the firewall. I want people using my connection to be on the *outside*
of my firewall. Ideally the WAP should have 3 partitions, inside, outside,
and wireless, with inside and wireless protected from outside, and inside
protected from wireless. But the problem is of course that your average
home user would not be able to use file sharing between wireless and inside
nodes. It's the old tradeoff between security and lack of know-how. So the
result is that everyone runs with their pants down.

I have my WAP set to recognize specific MAC addresses and block all
others. That, however, doesn't prevent someone from evesdropping.

And if you have trained attack dogs who are conditioned to go nuts
when they spy the blue glow of a laptop screen in a darkened car.

Well, after reading all the replies, I feel better. Allen
assured me that he's got 128-bit encryption, and since
none of us are file sharing, our network is secure.
He was more worried about SBC sniffing around the
'hood, so he has me using a 45-character encryption key.
'Course, I only had to type it in the first time. Since then
the network has connected automatically, and I made sure
it wasn't to the Netgear one!!!

One of our neighbors, however, could be in deep
doodoo if any of the teens up here are brighter than
they look. :ož His "Netgear" network is totally
unsecured if *I* can use it. I mean, I'm no Einstein, eh?
LOL

No Einstein indeed! You ain't foolin' no one!

I know you and your hubby drive around with a cigarette lighter
powered laptop with airsnort and netstumbler running. Rifling through
people's shared folders and dropping in key loggers and backdoors.

Admit it! You have a can of spraypaint in the glovebox and y'all tag
and glyph people's curbs so your buddies can have a go too...

*Highly* unlikely! LOL

You'll get a kick outta this- I'm trying to tutor a friend
in reading headers so she can spot sockpuppets. I think
at this point my best course of action is to send her to a
tut after I Google a good one. (Tutorial = tut) :D

I don't remember where I saw it, but I can't hear the word "tutor" without
remembering a cartoon of a hard-of-hearing dog hanging out a car window
hollering to his buddy "They're taking me to be tutored!".

That's one of my favorite Far Side comics. My favorite, though, is
the one with a large snake crawling through a playpen with a large
lump in it's midsection, keeping it stick in the playpen.

There's a similar one with a food bowl nearby with the name "Garfield" on
it.
