Went to my Uncle's 60th birthday party yesterday up in Gold country and he
had the "green death", a green dust covering everything on his large
property. He warned everybody that their allergies would kick up today and
mine started last night on the way home. Stopped for a snack on the way
home before leaving town and the waitress said people she knew who'd never
had allergies were reporting them. And today I need to go scoop grass and
weed cuttings into the compost can....

You poor thing! I stayed indoors all day, with the air running. It
was up to almost 100 degrees, so here comes summer. I only darted
out right at dusk to feed the bunnies.
I stirred up some dust cleaning house today, but that didn't bother me.
So if I stay inside I'll be okay.

So how are you after going outdoors?

Surprisingly good. Pretty itchy from where the nastier weeds scratched my
bare arms but sinuses stayed pretty clear last night. I was amazed.

Here it's yellow death. Pine pollen. Vile stuff. I've never been one
for allergies, but this stuff makes you wish you were dead.

I can empathize.

I'm guessing ours is pine, as well. Perhaps mixed with cedar. Maybe the
different color is a property of the species?

I developed pine pollen allergies when I was 13 years old. OMG I
wanted someone to cut off my head. When I finally got to an area with
almost no pine trees (Arizona) I simmered down until I became sensitive
to citrus pollens. I was living in the Yuma Valley in the middle of the
citrus groves!
But moving up out of that valley once again brought a lot of relief. It's
only odd times now that something in the wind will bug me. We went into
town tonight for dinner, but I took a boatload of Sudaphed beforehand.

Could be. This stuff is almost neon yellow. Coats cars and the like in
a fine yellow powder. When it rains, there's a yellow scum that floats
on the tops of puddles.

The end effect is that you feel like you're dying without the actual
benefit of death.

And like I said, I've never had allergies before. Not until this
stuff.

I'm a migraine headache sufferer too. Used to be I'd get one maybe
every six months. During the hellish yellow death season, I was
getting them back to back with maybe a day in between where I was
without a migraine. This crap triggered them.

Needless to say, this ain't my favorite spot in all of the wide open
spaces of the grand Untied States o' 'Merca.

That's the vicious thing my doctor told me. Once you have such a vile
reaction, you're then sensitized to other allergens. How fair is that?
35 years with nary a sniffle, now I'm going to be prone to be allergic
to things?!

Yep. The worst part is trying to figure out what's
making your head explode. It took me years to identify one
source of agony for me- the bottle brush trees here. When
they're in bloom I don't go near them. AnnieMae even cut down
the one she had by her front entry for me. I felt so bad- I should
never have mentioned it, but I never thought she'd take such an
extreme measure.

Cocoa puffs?

I go to get allergy tested in less than 2 weeks. I had an extreme
sensitivity to cats as a young 'un, but it's not been so bad lately.
I used to have problems with chlorinated pools, too, but again, not so
much lately. Same with grass - problems when young, not so much now.
But I'm having constant ear and throat problems that my ENT believes
to be reflux and allergy related. I'm already taking something for
the reflux, but won't have anything for the allergies until I get
tested to find out what still gets me.

I swear, if I were allergic to cotton, I think I'd
just go ahead and off myself! Over 90% of my clothes
are 100% cotton- synthetics make me sweat, and of
course I'm allergic to wool and wool blends.
Right, like you *need* wool clothes here in Yuma....

It was 108 when we went into town at 5:30pm.

I remember when I was doing phone tech support in Texas and we were
having a heat-wave that made national news. People on the phone get
inquisitive and almost invariably ask during a lull, "So, where am I
calling in to? Where are your offices?"

I'd say, "Dallas, Texas".

"Oh man! You guys are getting hammered down there! I hear it's HOT!
But, at least it's a dry heat, right?"

I'd say, "Hot is hot, sir."

"Yeah, but a dry heat isn't as bad."

"You bake a turkey in dry heat..."

"Oh, yeah... that's true. Hey, you stay cool down there, okay?"

LOL. Was that the time they were putting ice blocks in swimming pools in
Dallas? Man it was hot that year. The only real difference between heat,
once you get to those temperatures, is with dry heat the sweat evaporates.
Here on the coast your shoes just fill up with sweat.

Was that 1980? If so, I was in Anadarko, Oklahoma, at

It didn't go below 100f, even at night. If you stood still long enough

Yep. I was here on the coast during that heat wave. It is always a few
degrees cooler here with the ocean breezes, but always near 100% humidity.
I hardly notice the humidity anymore though. I do notice when it gets low
cause I start losing moisture. The worst place in the world I have ever
been in the summer was Bisbee, Arizona. Resurfacing a parking lot of all
things, in mid summer. It was so dry you could not drink water fast enough
to replace what you were losing... I could feel the moisture evaporating
from my skin and body. I have some killer century plants growing in my
front yard here now though, a little souvenir from my visit to Hell. :^)

Fact: You can lose a gallon of water in an hour when the
temp is over 100 and the humidity is low.
That's 4, 8-ounce glasses every 15 minutes- almost a glass
every 3 1/2 minutes.

My father-in-law is a retired New Orleans fireman. He told me that
during the course of fighting a blaze in the summer, in the heavy
gear, he would routinely drop 5 to 15 lbs. He said they'd get back to
the station and literally pour themselves out of their boots in some
instances.

I was a bit skeptical until I got online and read the same facts you
just posted. And considering that a gallon of water weighs about
8.3lbs, and a good fire takes a while to fight... Sounds reasonable to
me!
