| I bought it. Yesterday.
It was only $19.99 at Best Buy.
How on earth could I refuse Tribes for $20?
So now I've got T:V, but what to do with it?
Save it as a collectible item? Install it just to check
out the cool scenery? Hmmmmm..............

That depends on which version of Tribes it is.

Are you in need of a doorstop? What about one half of a set of bookends?
You might also use the CD alone as a bookmark thing.
There's always paperweights as well.

If the manual's not heavy enough, you'll have to fill the box with sand.

Have I missed something with T:V - have they turned the master servers off
or something, or is this just a general comment on its crapness?

Actually you might like the single player campaign to brush up your skills.
There is a required patch to play online though. And yes, they released a
previous on-line-only game that could not play online until it was
patched... Oops!

Personally I was commenting on how crap it is, going off what others have
told me. I can't actually say if it's any good or not because the
developers can't be arsed in producing a Linux client. :/

For what it's worth, I've read that it is a decent single player game.
I've done the sniper droid demo and had fun with it. But then, I've
done the online demo and found it to be clunky, slow, and not very
"Tribesy" at all.
Install it and see how the single player game is. If you give it even
a half-hearted endorsement, I'll have to get it meself.

Okay, hubby teaches tomorrow night, so I'll try it out then.

Look for "Update".
Then jump on the Vengeance channel in MA's TeamSpeak and see if anyone's
playing:
http://matureasskickers.net/m/servers/teamspeak.php
Fafhrd's got some nifty rover maps where he's populated the map with lots
of rovers. Lots of silliness ensues. I was gonna post a link to a
screenshot but he posted it in the private section of the forums. :/

Thanks muchly! Like I said, it'll be next week- we jumped on that
mess in the office today. Wowza.
BUT, I did make sure that T1 & T2 are still functioning properly
on my desktop. Since I've got a dial-up backup for this laptop, I can
put the info into the desktop and play like I used to, before getting the
f00king satellite.
I won't be able to tie up either of the phone lines during the day,
but I can try the DSL wireless on this with T1 when I install it.
I found my diskettes and CD with all my Tribes goodies on them,
like the patch to get T1 up to version 1.11, or whatever it is. (My
CD is version 8.something)
God bless IcyHot for being such a dear friend, or I'd be bugging
the hell out of you guys next week! LOL
Gosh, I better find my headset with the microphone.........

ROFL You know what Cubby? It's really okay! I love that

Adrian's done the same, I believe, so you're not alone at any rate.
Your apology is totally accepted! By the way, I've always loved
your posting nick. How does "Bitchzilla" sound? Too coarse? I've
been wanting a new Tribes player name, with "-zilla" on the end.
Here's why- a dear friend who died just a few years ago was
a paraplegic, and he was in the process of creating a line of gear
for folks who are wheelchair-bound. The brand name for the wheel-
chair accessories is "Wheelzilla". http://www.wheelzilla.com/
So you see why I'm fond of the "-zilla" part. Help me figure
out my own "zilla" nick, would you? Grannyzilla? Ew, no, not that.....

College. Went to university when I was a young lad of 18, dicked around
for three years (never getting my first-year degree, a "propedeuse"),
spent two years doing nothing scholastic, then got back into college
(one step below university).
So yeah, it's actually pathetically simple. It's almost impossible to
actually fail a test, though some folk apparently manage it.
But since the Dutch word for college would be "Hogeschool", or "High
school", I refer to it as "school".

That's very different from our system! Here a college is pretty
much the same as a university, except that a university includes
several colleges.
For example, in my hometown we have the university of Georgia,
which has a college of veterinary medicine, a college of agriculture,
a college of pharmacy, etc..
What you describe is what we call a "junior college" or a "community
college". It's a step between high school and college, with programs
that are usually a maximum of two/three years, with modest degrees.
You can complete nursing school, for instance, but there is no medical
degree offered.
I teach part-time at our local community college- we offer a culinary
arts certificate, and I teach the baking class. Ross teaches the hot foods
section, and our mentor & friend teaches all the rest.
Oops, sorry, didn't mean to go on, but I think the differences in the
school systems is interesting!
quote:
>

How do you acquire a PhD? A Doctorate degree? Here, you continue
on after college or university and go to graduate school. If you want a
Masters degree, you also go on to grad school.
Oops, sorry again....... :oP

Yeah, that does sound different.
Dutch education is very tiered, after primary school (like, up until age
11-12). After that, where you folks get your average "Junior High", I
think, we get either either:
4 years of VMBO: Preparatory vocational school, these folks become
blue-collar workers.
4 years of MAVO: This is where secretaries and other lower-schooled
white-collar workers come from, can go on to MBO.
5 years of HAVO: Higher schooled white-collar workers, can continue on
to HBO later)
6 years of VWO: Preparatory scientific school, who can go on to university.
A reasonable enough review of this system:
http://widjaja.us/kwidjaja/school.html
Then at the 'higher' levels, you get:
MBO: Very varied, very practical. Think low-tier programmers,
technicians, possibly things like your nurses, or whatever.
HBO: Not a TV channel. What I'm doing now. (I actually followed VWO, so
should have done uni, but couldn't finish). Literally "Higher vocational
education". Teachers, quality programmers, accountants, etc. Equivalent
to a Bachelor, but because Holland is the only one which makes this
distinction, I will not be able to claim a B. Sc., only a B. Stupid shit.
University: Masters classes. Theoreticians, professors, rocket
scientists, etc.

You can get a European Masters degree in about five years at a uni.
Having a Bachelors means you can often go for Masters in about two years.
Ah, a webpage:
http://www.eur.nl/english/education...cational_system
PhD's and doctorates, I have no clue. It involves being older than I am
and doing obscure things, paying for your own examination and ensuing
party (a lot of money), and doesn't sound like fun in the least.
Me, I'm stopping after I get my title of 'ingenieur', and I'm gonna make
some actual money for a time. I hear that's all the rage among kids,
nowadays.

Wow, that's a very different system indeed- so many different
types of schools. Of course, some things are different here as you
go from state to state. In Georgia we went by a 4 quarter system,
which were school periods of nine weeks. Out here in Arizona they
use a 3 semester system, which is 16 weeks each. Go figure.
In Georgia, grades 7-9 are junior high school, while here they
are "middle" schools. And in some other states, high school includes
grade 9.
So I suppose the whole world is doing its own thing as far as
schooling goes! And I quit in grade 10, as I already knew everything.
:D
Yes, I really did quit, but later took the test to get my equivalency.
I find it amusing that I now teach kids who are high schol graduates
who can't read or write. Hmmm, not amusing exactly.....more along
the lines of totally disgusted. I mean, I even understand algebra, but
these kids can't divide 2 into 4 and get a correct answer.
Which brings me to another point- almost every person I correspond
with online is a foreigner- someone who was born and lives outside
the U.S. Why? Because their grammer, spelling, and puctuation are
decent. Even if it's in another language. And they can think without
AOL telling them what they know.
The other folks I tappity-tap with are well-educated, like Troy and
Bryan. And oddly, I only communicate with 3 women online- but
all three share common interests and type properly.
I'm not a snob by any means- I don't care what folks look like
one bit, or how they dress, etc.. But I suppose I have a distaste for
folks who can't flip to "adult" when they're online. I love being an XXX
in here at times- it's so totally me! Good fun and silliness are a huge
part of my Usenet activities, but sometimes I want to talk like an adult.
Oops. Oh well, we'll just call the above "Chapter Two" of the book
I seem to be writing online..........

Yup. And, obviously, there are ways of shifting upwards as well. After
the CITO exam (which limits where you can go) if you're assigned to
MAVO, you could continue to MBO, and from there move up to HBO, and once
you've got your first year of that you can start a university Bachelors
program, or you can finish your Bachelors and do the Masters at a uni.
All very interesting, though fortunately behind me. Of course, I went
straight to the VWO (which is, by the way, further subdivided into
Atheneum and Gymnasium, the latter including ancient Greek and Latin)

My school periods are officially semesters, but in reality quarters of
10 weeks each, of which 7-8 are for working and the rest for exams and
project assessments.

At the HBO, in higher education, someone had to divide 15 by 4.
Obviously, this gives a fraction, and one way to calculate it would be
to divide 16 by 4 (=4) and subtract 1/4, giving 3 and 3/4.
A student actually managed to write down: I cannot calculate this, as I
am not allowed to use a calculator.
The teacher is rather sarcastic in general, but was downright venomous
talking about this.
Oh, speaking of venomous teachers:

I always enjoy correcting people's spelling, with them then saying

I like form. People say that it's the content that matters, but that's
bullshit. If your goal is to communicate, then you want to be sure
people understand you, and the way you do that is through proper
spelling and the Bad Boys of Punctuation).

I loath net-speak. English, even though an aggregate language cobbled

Let me qualify that by changing that sentence to:
"The first mime I've ever seen who is actually funny."
All the rest should be bludgeoned to near death, and then shot in the
kneecaps.
Which, of course, makes for approximately two discomfited no-talent XXX
clowns, since mimes aren't so common around these parts.

Mimes and their inbred cousins circus clowns are seriously -not- funny
in my estimation. Even as a kid I took no joy in clowns.
I remember my family watching prime-time mime team Shields and Yarnell
back in the late 70's. Even at about 12 years old, I had contempt for
the entertainment "stylings" of this dismal duo.

It is now my mission in life to make an undetectable barrier that I
can trap a mime in. Placed in public, no one would ever be the wiser
that they are actually encased in an invisible box, starving to death!
"Get a new routine, XXX hole!" passers-by would scream abusively to
the poor mime feeling around for an exit to the imperceptible prison.
After that, I'd construct an undetectable, inescapable wind tunnel...

As Terry Pratchett puts it so wonderfully in _Men At Arms_:
"People laughed at clowns, but only out of nervousness. The point of
clowns was that, after watching them, anything else that happened seemed
enjoyable."

Actually, either Penn or Teller is a mime. Mimes can be funny (as
displayed in the Torn video), but not in their stereotypical routines.

The stereotypical mime is the loathsome ilk of which I focus my
contempt. Physical humor is great. As Mr. 15K pointed out, Harpo Marx
is a great exception to the "mime" rule.

I go back to Charlie Chaplin's antics, and I couldn't stand him
even as a small child. Ditto Shields & Yarnell.
But you know, there was one group that was so innovative, I
would sit mesmerized and watch them. They had an odd name which
I'll attempt to type: Mummenschantz. (I have no idea if thats right.)
I understand that The Blue Group is also *beyond* mime, that

viewing of them in a non-commercial setting.

I guess in Berkeley they've never heard of file encryption, passwords
or even not leaving high dollar items out with your back turned.
I have the feeling he was bluffing his nards blue because, if what he
says is true about having high-dollar, classified, proprietary data on
the drive, then he's the one in deep shit.
The first thing he says sets the bogus tone of the rest of his tirade.
"Within 15 minutes, the folks in Redmond, Washington bla bla bla..."
yeah right. That's not how MS anti-piracy works. They don't ring you
up and demand info.

Too true.
You should see what forms of public punishment / death I have in mind

I'm totally for castration and death. Not necessarily in that order,
either.
The American prison system is not designed for rehabilitation of the
problem these people have. So they get out and are still predators.

Yikes. My proposal for dealing with our prison population is to have
a pay-per-view executions channel. Every four minutes, a new prisoner
gets executed. The proceeds from the channel pay for the prisons.
When we run out of death-row inmates, we hit the hard core lifers and
pedophiles. When we run out of them, we start down the chain. I
won't make up the chain, but I include car thieves high up, since I've
had to deal with that problem lately. I truly feel that 15 executions
an hour will quickly put a dent in the prison problem, as well as
likely reducing the number of first offenders. At the very least, we
will reduce the number of repeat offenders.

Only thing is we'd run out of death row inmates in about 10 days, however
total prison pop would take about 16 years to run through, but that
includes white collar criminals, drunks, etc.
Imagine about 15-20 years from now when we start running out of people;
"I'm getting executed? BUT I WAS ARRESTED BECAUSE I SHOWED UP DRUNK FOR MY
DIVORCE! I AM ONLY BEING HELD TILL TOMORROW MORNING!"

I don't think enough can be said for caning. I don't know how many
whacks would generally be fatal, but given the crime, I think there
should be a set number of cracks with a cane that is doubled per
offense.
So let's say peddling crack cocaine is 5 solid, martial-arts-master
administered lashes with a rattan cane. Next offense is 10. Which
might be fatal. 20 would certainly do lasting physical damage.
Eventually, the criminals unlawful impulses would be writing checks
his XXX and back couldn't cash.
Of course, there are those bleeding hearts that will whine "cruel and
unusual". But what's more cruel, in my estimation, is society having
to continually put up with unrehabilitated criminals coming out of
prison with more street smarts and a hardened attitude.
A little negative reinforcement might remedy that.
Of course, sexual predators should be killed outright. I saw a
statistic on the news yesterday talking about child predators. It said
that for every act that gets a conviction, on average, a predator
against children has 130 other instances that go unpunished.

Too bad there aren't incorruptable people that can be given Judge
Dredd status. Judge, Jury, Executioner all in one package. All on the
spot.

I like the thought of that.
OK, so we modify it. Start out every 12 minutes. Offer that as a
special month long pay-per-view package deal, or make it available by
the day or week. When the death row population runs out, we drop to
every 30 minutes. Naturally, this will be accompanied by a reduction
in the pay-per-view price. After we execute half of the current
existing population, we go to a once per hour deal, and change from
pay-per-view to subscription access. Probably charge about double
what HBO charges. That will last a long time, and in a few decades,
we can phase out the program, and just use nightly news cast to
televise special executions, which likely won't be occurring all that
much any more.
