| This is too cool- I've settled into my "papercraft"
room to clean it up, and thanx to wireless gizmos, here
I am. Just amazes me still. Plus, with the laptop, I can
find, d/l, and print graphics to make my cards and stuff!
The newest HP printer is so light that I can tote it
everywhere, and it uses a USB interface, too! Yep, this is
just totally bitchin'.
It's gonna be real hard to make me work at my desktop
now. But I'll *play* on it. :D

See, my old HP 722C got to the point where I winced
visibly when I had to buy ink. So I'm in Staples, and the 5150
was only $20 more than the two ink cartridges I needed.
Nobrainer there, as it takes less expensive cartridges. In
fact, it takes the same ones that Ross' all-in-one monster unit
takes, so we can get those bulk packs at Sam's Club.
Then I got this laptop, and was toting the above-mentioned
printer between it and the desktop. Bullllllllshit.
So, last weekend I got a cool 5700 for my desktop, and
kept the 5150 for the laptop. I parked it in the "paper room"
for my papercrafting. :D
Say, I'm a full-fledged propeller head now! See, I went to
install the 5150 in the desktop, and when finished, it wouldn't
print in color. Tried most everything, but then I got *real* sick
and said OWFI, ya know?
So when I was feeling better, I tried to install it in this laptop.
No go- autorun wouldn't fly, and the damn Windows Installer
just refused to see the drivers and shit on the CD. I got REALLY
pissed off and thought about it for quite awhile. Then........*!*
I copied the HP CD onto the laptop hard drive, and then went
hunting .exe's. BINGO. Even printed in color. No problemo!
So, back to the desktop I go, uninstalling the HP stuff first, and
tried the same routine. This time it was a no go. It's been about
3 years now since I've reformatted that f00king beast, so it's getting
more than just a little pissy. Still nothing but B&W.
Then I figure, what the hell, printers are cheap now, just go get
one for the desktop and be done with the hassles. I don't need to
be toting anything bulky around anyway, so that was solved, too.
The 5700 installed into my desktop, although I had to go to
Windows Explorer and hunt .exe's that way. But it works like a
champ!
Now I'm thinking that perhaps my CD drive in the desktop is
croaking. It's making a weird noise, and I haven't disabled the
autorun feature in Windows, so what's up?
I've got a spare CD drive, thanks to Pokey, so I might just
switch them out as soon as I can and see if that's the problem.
So, anyone need an older HP 722C? If you can afford the
cartridges, it needs a home.

Yeah, ink. Me, I'm gonna buy me a Canon MP130, soonish. It's an
all-in-one doohickey, and it's at the cheap bracket of the market.
Why Canon? Well, good reputation for optical stuff, and the ink is
cheap. About 6 euros for an ink tank (10ml, not 19ml like the HP ones,
though).
HP isn't too bad, especially since you can get other-brand cartridges
for 'em.
Lexmark is popular over here because it's cheap equipment. Then people
go bust on the ink. I could get a fully equipped, new-in-box Lexmark
all-in-one for about 10 euros more than just the two cartridges.
Anyone have any good reasons not to go for a Canon all-in-one?

None that I can think of.
I try to go laser for monotone prints and save color ink for special
prints that actually NEED color. The bulk of my black and white
printload is done on a cheap Samsung ML-1750 and I have an inkjet for
the actual color stuff.

Canon is always my printer of choice, for exactly the reason you state,
affordable ink. I shop ink refills and then find the printer to match. :^)
Ink can definitely be the expensive end. I love the separate ink tanks in
Canon's because they are incredibly easy to buy refill kits for and fill
yourself. My current is an i550 that I snatched for less than $100 and it
does amazingly nice photos on photo paper too.

Well, yeah. How do you think they make money? Printer manufacturers have
begun using the same sales formula that razor manufacturers have used
for years. Sell the product for dirt cheap and make the money on the
consumables.

I never bother with the Setup. Just go to the Printers folder, choose
Add Printer, then point it to the CD. The driver will install that way.
At least, it will if it's a decent driver.

Good advice. Laser printers are generally much less expensive per print.
Sure, the toner is costs a lot more than an inkjet cartridge, but it
lasts so much longer that it costs less in the long run. Plus, unlike an
inkjet, if you rarely use the printer, the toner doesn't dry up.
I do most of my printing on my Minolta Color PageWorks/L, but only
because my Samsung ML-5000A isn't hooked up. Since I hooked up a second
computer for my son, there's no place to put the thing. Plus, I recently
reinstalled Windows, thanks to a hard drive failure (literally 8 days
after the warranty went out), so I have to dig up the driver I tweaked
to get it to (barely) work under XP.

That's why I self-elevated myself to a bonafied Propeller Head-
I tried that also. Got an error message that said the software I needed
wasn't there. I also tried folders and subfolders on the CD with no luck.
Now, I wonder if that CD is borked? But if so, why did the copy I
put on my HD work?

Exactly. The initial cost of the toner/drum cartridge is really only
slightly more expensive, but the per-print cost is a lot lower
compared to inkjet.
I mean, a new Samsung toner is $60-ish on the cheap. But your typical
HP inktanks are like $40 for the two tanks.
I do just enough color printing to keep the heads from caking over,
but the bulk output is B&W, so that's a simple drop down selection for
the color inkjet since the laser is my default.

My wife is pricing large format (24") Designjets to go with her vinyl
plotter. I told her it would be a great idea to get it, that way I
could do custom vinyl case wraps!
When / if we ever get it, I'll post a link for my freshly graphic'd
tower, sleak with its Tribes montage graphics.
Hey, if anyone here would like some custom graphics for their case,
let me know. I'll use the feedback here to convince my wife that there
is a market for really spiffy graphics (Particularly TRIBES graphics)
on computer cases!

There's a lot of competition for signmaking. It's not easy. My wife
had her own screenprinting business when I met her. So she knows all
the ins and outs.
We sold her equipment when we moved. She had craploads of cool stuff.
An 8-foot dryer was just one thing we had.
The plotter, only being a 24" cut was one thing I begged her to keep.
I love having it. Since we've moved, we haven't made a whole lot of
money with it, mostly some decals on ebay. No big sign jobs, where the
real cash is.
But she's trying to gear up again and establish herself in signs,
textile, and all that. Which is cool, 'cause I can make myself all
kinds of wicked-cool stuff.
I wanted her to make stuff for the clan I was in, but it was breaking
up just as we were getting together. I could have gotten the clan all
kinds of cool schwag like mousepads, caps, t-shirts...
I'd like to put some custom printed vinyl wraps on ebay and see how
they sell. I made this cheezy mockup to see what it might look like.

Yeah, you could have any art imaginable, since it's basically just
printed on and impregnated into a slightly stretchy, very flexible
sheet(s) of vinyl film and applied to the case.
The groovy thing about vinyl film is it is very durable, but will come
off clean with care.
People ask me and my wife all the time if it will damage the paint of
their car when they go to get a decal made. The answer is: no. If
anything it protects the paint, with the undesirable side effect that
when the exposed paint fades, the stuff under the decal is kept new
looking. So you have an obvious kind of "tan line" where the decal
once was.

Well, I was thinking try find a nitch to fill, because I know I'd not have
a chance starting out doing signs. Unit I am looking at is a smaller 15"
unit with shit for printing too. I goto alot of carshows, because well, I
grew up with hotrods, and thinking about marketing things there, and
having other things that are similarly themed for computer cases and such
(A flaming dutchwork tiki head would look cool on a case cutout). Plus,
with this, I've been drawing dutchwork (type of pinstriping Ken "Von
Dutch" Howard used to do when he was living) and such for years, so that'd
help as things people that wanted similar things on a budget (plus me and
my brother do airbrush work, and help for stenciling that.)

Oh no, I remember the scowls *I* got when the match ran late
and dinner had to wait! And on practice nights, when I'd have rather
stayed online with the other Long Dongles than eat. LOL

Works very well for stenciling. And sandblast masking for etched wood
signs.

I used to do alot of glass etching with my sandblasting cabinet, so I know
how it is for that (although then, I hand cut the stencils). Plus this is
a way for me to use all those vector images I've been making for
years.

That's pretty cool. I like the way he outlined the process in pictures
for everyone so they could get a visual grip on what he's doing.
But even then, there was evident confusion. Your summation of the
process was spot on. Each individual letter is free standing, and it's
the transfer tape that keeps all the little bits in place during
application.
It works like this:
1. Solid sheet/roll of vinyl film on waxed backing.
2. Plotter precisely makes cuts into the vinyl without cutting the
backing.
3. Excess non-viable vinyl is "weeded" out, leaving only the lettering
or image on the waxed backing.
4. A low-tack transfer tape is applied over the lettering or image and
squeegied down so it makes full contact with every little piece of the
vinyl.
5. The surface the decal will be applied to should be cleaned with
glass cleaner to make sure no oils are dirt are present.
6. You then remove the waxed backing from the decal. What you have now
is the transfer tape with all the decal bits still attached and in the
proper place.
7. Carefully center and place the decal where desired. I like to start
on the right and work my way left, that way I avoid bubbles under the
film.
8. Before removing the transfer tape, use a stiff-edged item (I use an
actual plastic squeegee), a credit card works perfectly well. Make
sure that every letter or piece of graphic has made full contact by
going over and over it with the card or squeegee.
9. Start removing the transfer tape slowly and carefully from one
corner. Pulling back almost at an 180° angle, and about 45° from
corner to corner. The reason you do that is if you have vertical text
or lines in the decal, it's less likely to pull the vinyl off the
surface you've just applied it too.
Now, should something start to lift off, just give the tape some slack
and go over it with the card / squeegee some more on that particular
spot and it'll usually stick and you can continue pulling the
application tape off carefully.
The adhesive on the vinyl is more aggressive than the adhesive on the
transfer tape, so things very seldomly go awry if your surface is
cleaned well.
And, Scratch, your question about "dry application only" was a good
one in that forum. I know some people who take a slightly soapy water
approach to application. They'll use a spray bottle to wet the area
they want to apply to and then float the decal to exactly where they
want. Once in place, just squeegee the decal down tight.
I've never used that technique yet, but some people swear by it. I've
only done dry transfer.

I would have thought that the vinyl for decals would be much thinner
than the vinyl for the wraps, going by my experiences with those damn
things I used to get with model cars. Oh, and now fingernails. They make
some neat decals for long nails now.

Nah. You can touch the edges and feel its height. It wasn't until my
wife bought her plotter that I started to realize just how many vinyl
signs are in use around us. Hardly anything is hand-painted lettering
anymore.

Well I'll be doggonned. Back when I was living with the ex-boyfriend,
he once worked as a sign maker, using big machines to make stuff for
trucks, vans, etc. that needed the place of business on the door or side.
I still have some scrap pieces of vinyl that he used- they're really thick.
That was about 1991 or 1992, so the vinyl material must be thinner
than it was then. Cool! Because the stuff he used then would have been
a lousy choice for decals- I can't see it adhering very well, for very long.

The shit I am getting for the decals is 2.8mil, which works out to be like
..11mm.
