Well sheeeit. Man, I give up. I'm still going to play T1 & T2,
and try to find me another "outerspace & zoomy weapons"
type game.
See, no offense to BF1942, but it's not *in the future*. I want
cool shit like discs and land spikes and wildass landscapes. Jet
packs!
Oh man, I'm bummed. I'm not even going to buy it now.

Ain't Tribes (1 and 2) the coolest. I dig the networked deployable concept,
the great looking vehicles, and mid-air-discing. I don't even care that I
can't afford another game, I'm still having serious fun.

No shit?!?!? That's really heartening! The more (Tribes) community
involvement, the better the end product, IMHO.

Ed Zachary! The ONLY other cool thing I've seen that comes
close to the Tribes series is an upcoming movie- "Dragons". I can
tell I'm going mad-crazy for all things related to the movie, cuz they
made the dragons look so damn real, thanx to CGI.
www.dragonsarecoming.com
Seems to me the gaming developers could take some lessons
from the movie makers these days. All I want is a believable
futuristic game with smooth movement, cool graphics, bright &
realistic colors, and neat weapons.
WTF is so hard about that? It's been done twice, with T1 & T2!!
I dunno, Andy, I just don't get it. Then again, maybe I do.
You notice that the hugely successful movies have massive
marketing campaigns? Toys, dolls, coloring books, short story
books, etc., are plentiful for Shrek, Garfield, and every Disney
movie ever made.
Where's our Tribes coloring book? Our action figures?
Hell, I'm a real, fifty-two-year-old female who would buy
ALL things Tribes related, were they available. I did so when
Spiderman was released- that was always my favorite comic
from my youth. Ross just laughs at all my Spidey toys, but even
he knows why I buy them. And he's 57!
So tell me why the game makers don't market their games
properly. Stupidity? Lack of vision? Afraid to spend a few bucks
to earn more? Man, it beats me, but I think they're doing it all
wrong.

But... gamers don't want gameplay, they want benchmarkers.
How else can you show off what your hardware is? :/

In all seriousness, I disagree. I've "met" too many gamers near
my age while playing Tribes who want good gameplay as much
or more than I do.
Sure, a lot of us want the fastest, newest, coolest running, most
neon-lit whatzzit as soon as we can get our hands on it, and then
take digital pics and slap them up on a page for all to see, but that's
in *addition* to our gaming, not in place of it.
And our numbers are growing. We're nearing retirement, with
some serious cash in our pockets for "toys".

It was the passion of the moment. Besides, his fave car ever is the

Maybe, but I just decided to get serious. I'm just really
pissed about how the Tribes series was tossed out like bath water
by the folks entrusted with its care.
That, and I sparked another pretty-high fever. It seems to make
me wordy, and type on at length. See? LOL

Good heavens! Sex toys was NOT what *I* was talking about!
That's gotta be a "guy thing" today- look what my (other) friend
Dave wanted me to look at: <www.fleshlight.com> CAUTION!!
That link IS NOT work OR child friendly!!!!
Luckily, the subject of his post gave away some hints. I suppose
I should be glad it wasn't the whole damn doll.........
Hmmmmm, "Spring has Sprung"?

The Tribes franchise was doomed when Dynamix were 'disbanded'.

Very true. It's a shame the franchise wasn't given or sold
to an outfit/company that would support it. *That's* what
makes me so damn mad at times.

That's good news!
(no, really)
This kind of thing kind of happens in waves. Big business gets
involved, squashes creativity and innovation to squeeze every last
nickle out of a tried-and-true genre.
The people revolt and circumvent the cloying, stagnant domination of
the corporate mindset with a new renaissance of kickass games written
by indie and rogue programming houses who are tired of getting dicked
around and stifled. And then the cycle starts over.
Vivendi's approach is like a scientist trying to figure out what makes
a cat purr by jamming a scalpel into its neck, then wondering why the
purring has stopped.
They can't leave well-enough alone. They can't give creative control
to those that have proven themselves. It is beyond them to understand
that a game can be quite successfull without being a huge blockbuster.
Their measure of success isn't quality of product. It isn't
playability, fun factor, or joy. It's how many francs are in the
coffers at the end of the fiscal quarter.
A sold base of true fans and devoted enthusiasts are not a mark of
success, they are a liability.
