Oh yes. What impressed me about them is that Angus Young doesn't do any
double-tapping... and he's fast.
Mind you, he is slowing down... but he isn't getting any younger, I guess.

Double-whatnow? The only fast tapper I know of is Michael Flatley (whose
Lord of the Dance, while looking moderately gay (leather pants), was
impressive and entertaining).

Double-tapping. It's a style of playing the guitar...:
http://www.guitartricks.com/2000/tr...p?trick_id=2861
And if you want to hear it being done rather well, listen to Eddie
Van-Halen's guitar solo called "Eruption".

Oddly, this makes him sound a bit like a NES video game. But impressive,
to get that out of an instrument.
As an aside:

Slower, perhaps, but still capable. Mercy, I hope they stay in

Yes, in the beginning. There was also Mortal Kombat (with the ninja[1]),
Zelda (http://www.zelda.com/universe/), probably Castlevania (not sure,
never played it except on my cellphone's NES emulator), etc...
Well done, too. Never saw live tetris before.

Aha! AnnieMae used to be a total *fiend* for the Mario

I'm in love with Rajjiv a/l Kannarajah, whoever he is. My god,
he can read my mind! To wit:
"Unable to play basic guitar, bands like Korn and Staind tune their
guitars down so low, it is almost impossible to determine whether they're
playing a guitar riff, or if my stomach's rumbling."
And better still:
"Kurt Cobain (Nirvana's lead) struck the fatal blow to metal, and,
worse, he was proud of it. He felt that by replacing the spirited, uplifting
sounds of real metal with his depressing dirges, he was taking music
forward. He thought that going from an era where virtuoso guitarists were
glorified, to an era where it was uncool to be an accomplished musician
was progress. He thought that taking away music based on melody and
replacing it with angry yelling was an improvement."
And this brilliant gem:
"Rap and Turn Tables. Nauseating. DJs calling themselves musicians
after scratching some black disc and holding half a headphone to their ears,
bouncing up and down, turning some phony dials - laughable."
May the Music gods bless this fellow.

My music tastes are *very* eclectic- I run the gamut from old
'Negro hymns' to speedmetal. In the genre you like, I adore Jimmy
Webb, among others.

| Just as an aside to the musical part of this thread, one of
the BEST times I've ever had in my life was at a small, win-the-
tickets-on-air radio station concert at the Wiltern theater a few
Decembers ago.
I was in pig heaven. *The* Waddy Wachtel was onstage
playing as only he can, while George Thorogood and Kenny
Loggins stood side-by-side trading licks.
OH MY GOD. I didn't know Loggins could totally rock
out like that. I don't remember what song they were doing,
but I remember thinking I could die happy now.

No, I can't agree with that- it's not true speed metal to *me*.
Loved Judas Priest and Megadeth, and there's another band
whose name escapes me.......just can't recall it tonight, but man,
were they *fast*.
One ancient Kraftwerk cut had speed elements- but here again
senility takes its toll. Dammit. It's the song which has the high-pitched
screaming going on............
OH! The other band is/was Anthrax.

| Nowadays I mostly listen to softer stuff, although AC/DC is still
pretty good, its no longer at the top of my list. Just a bit heavy for
me. I've started listening to a lot of russian music, too. Mostly its
stuff like Fastball, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nickelback etc.

I wouldn't classify Paranoid as a speed metal bit. This part is more
of what I considered "speed metal".
"Later speed-metal efforts that bear special mention include
Helloween's Walls of Jericho (1985), Motörhead's live album No Sleep
'til Hammersmith (1981), and the band Megadeth, which considers itself
the "World's State-of-the-Art Speed Metal Band". Prior to joining
megadeth Marty Friedman colaborated with Jason Becker in perhaps the
band that best represents this subgenre Cacophony."
Cacophony was so technical as to not even really be music anymore.
Running scales of 128th notes, to me, while impressive, technically,
does not really define music anymore. That's just showing off. :D
Anyone remember Slade? Are they still going? Now those blokes knew how
to lay down a jaunty bit of old school rock/metal and a Spectorish
wall o' sound. Big drums, big guitar, big vocals.

Nevermind. Answer found. :D
"Slade's attempts at cracking the American market were largely
unsuccessful, although they obviously left their mark on a large
number of US bands who cite Slade as an influence. A cover of the
single "Cum on Feel the Noize" by Metal group Quiet Riot was a smash
Top 5 hit in America in 1983. Slade's sound and image influenced a
number of American rock groups in the 1970s, particularly KISS, whose
bassist Gene Simmons readily admitted that their whole early
songwriting ethos as regards singles was loaned from Slade's good-time
approach."
Having known of Slade here in the US and having to really hunt for
vinyl from them, I always thought Quiet Riot were a build-a-band
created by Slade in a kind of "If you can't get into us because we're
British, here's us as American's." I guess they were just covering a
tune.

Yup. Noddy currently can be seen in the UK advertising foodstuffs, fwiw.
He also did a stint as being a radio DJ.

That does surprise me, tbh. I would never have regarded Slade as being
influential.

I hope they don't do the Lynard Skynard thing where they're touring
with only the "Original Lighting Gaffer!"

That's the first time I've seen it as well, and it fits in with the
current trend of "Insult viewers intelligence". :/

Well, bear in mind that we've also had "Beer nuts", here in the UK. They
slowly vanished, as people realised that they were just... nuts.

I find Deer Nuts are cheaper. Beer Nuts are $2 a can.
Deer Nuts, well, they're under a buck.

Sure!
I really wanted to go to Edinburgh to see the Military Tattoo, live
and in person. But circumstances didn't allow me to go over the
summer. So I've had to push it back to this spring. Maybe late winter.
