| I heard System Of A Down's cover of "The Metro" on the radio today, and
was kind of surprised out how well they covered it. It's quite different
than the original.
So, I started thinking of some other great covers. Here's my list of
covers that are worth listening to at least once.
System of a Down, "The Metro" - They really made this sound like their
own thing. Pretty good.
Faith No More, "Easy" - There's something funny, yet good, about hearing
Gary Cherone singing the words that Lionel Ritchie made famous.
They Might Be Giants, "Maybe I Know" - As with most of their covers,
it's better than the original. Of course, it wouldn't take much to
improve on a bubble-gum pop song from Leslie Gore.
Korn, "Another Brick in the Wall" - It's definitely Korn.
Johnny Cash, "Personal Jesus" - Just putting this artist together with
this song makes you think, "WTF?" Still, it's good. Damned good. Right
up there with his cover of "Hurt."
Metallica, "Turn the Page" - It's just classic.
The Cardigans, "Iron Man," - Yes, from the same band that brought us
"Lovefool" comes this, uh, interesting rendition of Black Sabbath's
classic rock tune. Yes, it's just wrong, but it's so different you
should listen to it at least once.
Great Big Sea, "The End of the World" - What do you get when you cross a
Celtic rock band with R.E.M.? Well, you get a pretty damned good cover,
that's what.
Cake, "I Will Survive" - Wow. Talk about different.
Various Artists, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - This has been covered by
several bands. Of note: Tori Amos - You can actually understand the
words; They Might Be Giants - Well, it was kind of a joke when they
covered it and deliberately mumbled the lyrics; The Bad Plus - Nirvana
done as a Jazz instrumental? Gotta love it! Paul Anka - Huh?
Depeche Mode, "Route 66" - What list of covers would be complete without
this classic? Did you know this song was written by Bobby Troup of
Emergency! fame and was also covered by Troup's wife Julie London, who
was also in Emergency!? Well, now you do.
The Flaming Lips, "Can't Get You Out of my Head" - It's The Flaming Lips
covering pop crap. Need I say more?
Any others I should know about?

And, there's "Ozzy Osbourne" belting out the classic "Bee Gees" track...
'Stayin alive'.

"Fear Factory and Gary Numan"... "Cars". "The Sex Pistols"... "Johnny
B.Goode/roadrunner" (yep, seriously!). "Die Krupps"... "Fatherland" (or is
this just a remix?). "Marilyn Manson"... "Tainted Love" (jic this one
slipped your memory).
I was going to say all the stuff that Metallica covered... but I realised
I cba.

I prefer the Chuck Berry version

The only one from your list I like is the "Route 66" cover
by Depeche Mode.
Man, this is a subject to think about- I recall more covers
I hated than ones I liked........

I never really knew who the lead singer of Faith No More was. The only
band member I knew by name was James Martin, thanks to Bill & Ted's
Bogus Journey, even though I have a few of their albums. "The Real
Thing" was one of the best songs and albums not only by them, but by
just about anybody.

Uh...interesting. Funny, actually. I'm listening to "Closer" now (I love
Rhapsody). Singing that song in that style is just classic. It reminds
me of _Gravelands_ by The King or something by Dread Zeppelin (who'd
have thought you'd hear "Immigrant Song" done reggae-style with Elvis
singing?)

Well, I found it (I wish Rhapsody would let you search on more than just
one field -- there are lots of Route 66 covers). Pretty good. While
searching, I found the version by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Wow. I
also found their cover of the Hawaii 5-0 theme. Neat.

Hey! There was some They Might Be Giants on that list.
How about Deerhoof's cover of "My Pal Foot Foot"? Okay, so it sucks, but
it was somewhat surprising to not only find a cover of this classic song
by The Shaggs, but an entire album called _Better than the Beatles: A
Tribute to the Shaggs_. Most of the songs on the album are better than
the originals. Of course, my dog sounds better when singing than The
Shaggs, so that's not saying much.
As for TMBG, here are some of the covers they've done that I think
turned out better than the originals.
"New York City" - Originally by a band called Cub. TMBG's version is a
lot better. I'm a bit partial to it, though, since it's the first song
they played at their first concert I went to.
"Yeh Yeh" - A cover of the old Georgie Fame song. I saw them play this
live, complete with sax, and it floored me. Even the ushers at The
Wiltern were dancing to this one. Their version is a little more upbeat.
"Istanbul (not Constantinople)" - Undoubtedly, their most well-known
cover. Of the many variations they've done, the live version from their
Flood Show is my favorite.
"Caroline No" - Well, I kind of like the Beach Boys' original better,
since Flansburgh can't quite hit the high notes like Brian Wilson, but
the horns on the version by They Might Be Giants make up for it.
"Frankenstein" - I don't know if I'd say it was better than the Edgar
Winter Group's version, but it's just as good and a bit different.
Imagine the song redone with a heavy emphasis on the brass section, yet
still with a killer drum solo.

'lifetime', that's all.

Because to my ears, the song is totally ruined by others doing it-
it sounds unnatural and awful to me. I expect to hear John, Paul, or
John & Paul singing it, with an ocassional turn by George or Ringo.
And people mess with tempos and keys when they cover a song-
I detest that.

It's *really* enjoyable. Hmmmm, imagine a slightly uptempo,
mellow/jazzy rock. Just a hint of synthesizer....it's very hard to
describe, you really should give it a listen- I think it's brilliant.
I've got the 45rpm, but I can't rip the track off of *that*.

Preaching to the choir here!!! Gawd, I hate the Shaggs. I gave a
listen to "Better Than the Beatles" ages ago and immediately put the
Shaggs on my "Kill At First Sight" list. Gah.

Yeah, I got all of their albums, and most of the stuff is in that fashion.
Check out the songs "Insane in the Brain", "Baby got Back", "Rock the
Casbah", "Beat It", "Brass Monkey", "Enter Sandman", "Let's Get it
Started". "Me So Horney" and "The Girl is Mine" are just funny.

Ah yeah, Setzer has done some cool stuff. If you like his stuff, Reverend
Horton Heat did "Hello Walls", "Fulsom Prison Blues", and "Get Rhythm".
Another great guitarist thats done some covers, as well as done some songs
that others cover, is Dick Dale (You might be familiar with the song
Miserlou, which was used during the title of Pulp Fiction).

Sure you can. I've done that before. Just route the speaker output from
the record player to the line in on the computer. Typically you just need
a quarter inch plug audio cable and a neck down adapter to the 2.5mm Mini
Stereo. I also have a handy little device that uses USB for that. (I use
that stuff for my guitars)

The Beatles? Aren't they that group that wrote songs for shoe

Actually had a girl ask me that when I worked at a record store.
Someone in the store wanted to hear something off The White Album.
Girl asked who the group was, since they sounded pretty good.

Anything by Hayseed Dixie (that is their name now, isn't it?). Also,
I believe there is a polka band who does all kinds of hard rock/heavy
metal covers as polka tunes. Need to find out who they are again,

Bah! Those aren't on Rhapsody. I might have to actually go to a music

original: Melissa Etheridge covering Janis Joplin's "Piece Of
My Heart".
That's the ONLY Janis cover I've ever heard that I liked.

Opening up the internet? Why, the ARE the internet!!!
Or so some people seem to believe.
Blind Leading the Blind: A case in point. My wife's uncle got a hare
to get a computer. Why? Mainly because he's competitive and wanted one
faster and "better" than his sisters.
He asks me, "What's the best computer I can buy?"
Depends on what you want to use it for... What's the best car? What's
the best shoe?
"Goddamn it, you sound like everyone else. You've told me shit. Just
answer the question."
[Default answer to uppity n00bs] Dell, get a Dell.
"Which one, then?"
[I flip through his Dell catalog to the back where their most
expensive machine is] This one, buy this one.
"See. was that so hard?"
Then, when he takes possession of his shiney new shitbox, at his
"expert" son's prodding, he subscribes to SBCGlobal DSL and then buys
a subscription to AOL so he can access the internet.
I tried to tell him he doesn't need AOL to access the internet.
"Brett says I do! That's what he has."
Hey, man, you enjoy AOL. And since I don't use AOL, if you have
further questionas about connectivity or content, Brett is the expert,
okay?

Oh man. See, I can understand why AOL keeps chicks as customers,
since most are totsl airheads, but *men*?!?!?!?
I mean, if *I* was repulsed by the cutesy GUI, why aren't more guys?!??
What really pisses me off is when you try to explain that the dunce
paid Microsoft hundreds of dollars for software they aren't using because
of AOL's bullshit and you get back the idiot response of "Well, AOL works
for what I want to do."
Totally clueless. Fine. Enjoy your online Hell. And don't ask *me*
how to post a photo to Usenet. I mean, your "boards"............

Why did the blonde have a sore navel?
Because there are blonde *men*, too!
(BTW, noting your name "BunBun", have you read John Ringo's Posleen series?
The switchblade-toting rabbit makes an important appearance in about the
3rd novel.)

<Blink!> Wouldn't you do the standard Start/Run?

Alas, no. I haven't read much of anything for over a year.
I'm appropriately ashamed, however.

Left click?
Yes, the left mouse button.
But I only have one mouse, and it's to the right of the keyboard.

I drill down to whatever menu it's on and drag a copy of the shortcut to
the desktop. In later versions of Windows, I drag a copy to the Quick
Launch. But if I'm borrowing someone's system (like doing support for a
customer) I'll use the Start/Run approach. Note that you can hold down the
Windows key and hit 'R' to get the Run prompt.

You obviously don't have as many shortcuts cluttering up your desktop
as I do at any one time. Gawd, what a mess......... :o}
I've had to make folders to hold all of them, and when I can no longer
see the kitty wallpaper, I just drag them all to my "Sort!" folder and usually
forget about them until I need something. Then I'll sort a few into their
folders, out of guilt.
I'm better at keeping favorites (sites). A saved link goes directly into
a folder, no exceptions, even if I have to make a new folder. Otherwise
I'd never find my way back to stuff.

Nope. My Quick Launch gets pretty full, and my desktop stays relatively
uncluttered. I like XP's feature of auto-cleaning the desktop of unused
icons, but I'd like to set the timeout longer. (Anyone know how to change
that?)

Registry hack.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS
\CURRENTVERSION\EXPLORER\DESKTOP\CLEANUPWIZ
Locate Days Between Clean Up value to the right. Right-click this
value and select Modify. Change the value from Hex to Decimal, enter
your preferred interval, in days, between cleanup reminders, and click
OK.
Since you are the ubergeek supreme, I will not insult you with the
"poking about in your registry is tricky, dangerous business" speech,
nor shall I urge you to make a backup of your reg before modifying. :D
Now, who wants to know how to increase the simultaneous connections to
a web server in IE and Firefox?

I'd not recommend pipelining. I've seen it crash servers and such. Most
people are like "but not everyone does it, and its not like it uses extra
bandwidth because each one doesnt grab the whole thing" but what they
totally neglect is that it totally eats up a shitload of RAM on the
server. Also if you use a router with a browser accessable config, those
things hate pipelining. Those were only designed to handle one or two
similatious connections to the configuration area, where as with
pipelining, you start really hammering it. My brother had firefox on his
machine set to have 24 connections, and when ever he'd access his router
to fiddle with his firewall, he'd crash the router.

What Hellmark said. However, just because it's dangerous and
irresponsible doesn't mean you shouldn't know how:
Go to the URL:
about :config
And find the network.http section.
