OMGF. I have seen heaven and it's powered by a Sony Vaio
and an ATI Radeon 9700.

We just got a new store here, as part of a HUGE new
shopping center, and the first store to open was a Best Buy
last Friday morning. (It's a big chain electronics outfit, in many
states.)

We had to go into town tonight, so we finally drove over
to see this monster shopping center, and check out the
Best Buy.

Now, granted it was a Sony 17" LCD monitor, connected
to a powerful beast of a desktop Vaio, so I don't know whether
it was the monitor or the Radeon, but no shit, when I laid eyes
on the demo that was running, I literally stopped dead in my
tracks and stared in open-mouthed awe.

I must have it. OMG. I have NEVER seen anything like what was
on that screen. The demo was a sports car on a round, rotating
platform, and to say it was eye-popping bright and crystal sharp
just doesn't do it justice.
Maybe you folks have seen something this good, but I hadn't until
tonight. None of the other stores in town that sell computers have
anything like it set up for display, if they carry the components.

So when I got my act together, I found the laptop section and knew
I was in geek heaven. Row after row of them! Not just six or seven on
display, but 5 or 6 of EACH brand!

I picked out my dream machine, a 64 bit beauty of an AMD Athlon
in a Compaq case. Built-in card reader for easy use of my newer
Mavica with the memory stick, too!
So, my mission is to build my own version of this at the Compaq
site to get my final price, and then I'll know how much I need to get
my dream gaming computer. The model in the store had an Nvidia
onboard, and the salespeep couldn't find the specs for it, so he
guessed it was a 128MB. You can bet I'll be checking out that Radeon
9700 though!!! No way I'll settle for a measly 128MB again after seeing
that demo. Nuh-uh. Nope. No friggin' WAY.

<deep breath> Sheesh, if I have to, I'll buy that Vaio rig with that
monitor and the Radeon and lug the whole get-up to Maryland for the
LAN party. OMG I'd love to see T2 on that setup!! <drool>

Dudes, add another blade to my beanie- I've got true graphics lust.

I just put a Radeon 9800 into my comp...supposedly it can be flashed up
to a 9800 pro, but I haven't done so yet. It's all purty and stuff.

I have the 9700 pro OC'd a bit. It is a nice card. There is a tool called
ATI Tool that will automatically clock up until artifacts are seen and then
back down until even imperceptible artifacts are eliminated on repeated and
time-varied tests. Spiffy just to watch even, and will determine your
best/safest OC speeds. However, the 9800 pro is now cheaper than the 9700
pro some places, and a better buy.

I *hate* you.

Almost.

I've got an LCD monitor, so all I need is that card..................

I'll see your "purty" and raise you an "awesome".
