The only hitch I see is that neither Qwest (the telco here) or
APS (our electric provider) would ever consider my neck of the
woods as "rural".
I can't read the whole article right now, but I will, and I'll try to
make sense of it. Is this an option for a group of folks to try on
their own?

Probably not. Looking at the article, it looks like the equivalent of
putting up cell phone towers. You'd need to organize enough customers to
make it worthwhile.
There was a fixed wireless company in the south bay I looked into about 6
months ago that would put up a tower for your neighborhood if you could get
something like 200 residents to sign up, but I can't recall their name.

Bummer. About half of the folks up here on this hillside are only here
in the winter, and wouldn't be remotely interested in such a venture.
Well, another good aspect of this new Best Buy is that somehow the
management found some real decent propheads for floor people. Most
look to be bright young men, so I figure it would be smart of me to go in
there soon and see if any of them have sussed out any new options here
for gaming broadband.
The young fellow I queried about the laptops was astonished to learn
I was looking forward to the final release of T:V. His eyes lit up when I
mentioned the Tribes series, and seemed very well-versed on gaming
in general. What a shock compared to the idiots over at Staples. One guy
at Staples handed me a CAT5 cable when I was looking for a USB cable
one day. Good grief.
