TOT- So, um, news, sort of..........

| Well, I suppose it's time I filled you fellows in on why I'm not around
very much lately.
Long story short (shut up, Bry): I awoke one late July morning with
the entire left side of my face paralyzed. A stroke was ruled out, as was
the common affliction known as Bell's palsy.
So I'm still undergoing tests to find out the cause. An MRI of me pea
brain revealed "a small problem area" which one doc thinks might be
indicative of adult onset MS (Multiple Sclerosis), but another doc isn't
so sure. More tests this coming week.
XXXX. All I know is my vision is seriously FUBAR because of the paralyzed
left eye, which is blurry all of the time. Since this has been several weeks
now, I'm having to keep a steady flow of eye drops going in so that the cornea
doesn't dry out.
Seems the computer monitors in my house piss that eye off more than
anything else, so reading the monitor is a major PITA.
So, with eyeglasses and eye drops in hand, I've been relegated to
watching the tube. Gah. The Olympics was pretty interesting, but it's over
now, and most network fare sucks nads. I'm having serious computing
withdrawal and I'm getting a bit pissy about it.
Okay, more than a bit. The beta is out for T:V and y'all are checking it out
and I'm sitting here whining like a damn girl.
But I'm still saving my pennies for a new computer! This shit can't last
forever, and when it ends I'm getting a computer, T:V, and a fast gaming
connection. Then I'll come hunt you guys down and kick some XXX!
Okay, I'll run around and repair stuff, but I'll have a shitload of fun doing it.
:D
So, when the eye lets me, I'll be here. <wan smile>

Satellite and TiVo. There's some interesting stuff on but not on the Big 3
(or 4 for the younger readers). Check out Jeremiah. Same creator/writer as
Babylon 5. I hear that the 1st 2 seasons will be out on DVD shortly.
Note that if you already have a DirecTV connection, a DTV TiVo can be had
for $50-$100 and the additional connection is only $5/month.

It's a pretty game. I'm finding it to be like UT2004 with jetpacks. (Sorry,
had to irritate the die-hards. ;)) But the deployables are what really
interest me. I gotta go read up on those so I can use them effectively. So
we can fight over the repair packs!

Well, XXXX me with a sharp stick. When things are bad and think things
will get better they get worse. Have less than 30 days to move out of my
place, looks like I am losing my job tomorrow, house was broken into
today, just found out from a friend that her baby was stillborn then
immediately find out about this. Having shitty stuff happen to me I can
deal with, but its not good when my aura of crap starts effecting others.
Well, when I get moved and the phone setup, maybe can see about calling
and relaying info to and from the group that way.

Dude. Seriously not cool. Hope they find a cause, and that it's
reversible. Keep your legs elevated! Turn your head and cough!
On the plus side, you may now enjoy an action movie career like some
other guy, what's his name, Sylvester.

I've been looking at those ads and trying to get the hubster interested
in figuring out yet another video device.
I'm the resident computer geek, and he's in charge of all things video
as concerns the television, except for the remotes. He can't read the wee
buttons. LOL
The VCR hates me with a passion, but I did manage to whip the DVD
player into humble submission. (Had to- hubby can't read the buttons on
that either! ROFL)

I'm being a good girl and going for all the BS tests the

I'm still the same, but a bit less grumpy than a week ago.

What? "Dude" is a californianism that can mean an astonishing amount of
things.
Examples:
"Dude.": "Hey there", or "how're you doing?", or "Are you serious?
You're not kidding, are you?"
"Duuuude": "That looks awesome", or "Way to go!"
"Dude!": "Hey, you!", or "Come over here", or "That's not my XXXXXXX!"
Naturally some of these usages are more obscure than others, and the
list is far from complete, but one does what one can.

I rarely look at the buttons on my TiVo "peanut" remote. It's well-designed
so the buttons are big and positional and easy to identify. I believe it
got a "design" patent for that.
Linda has to memorize the buttons on her remotes given her poor vision. I
got her a purple peanut from the TiVo site for one birthday. I think she'd
now break my arm if I tried to take it away from her! (Alas, they appear to
no longer carry the purple one. Just black, blue, and clear.)

Commies! The nerve, to discontinue the purple!
I love the remote that came with our DVD player- very clearly labeled
and backlit to boot. Plus it has this neat "wheel" that you can use to
fast-forward or rewind at infinite speeds, including frame-by-frame.
What a blessing when neither of us heard what was said! Just a
quick flick and I can replay it instantly.

We've got a Betamax player with a jog wheel like that.
One of the TiVo buttons I use the most is "instant replay". It jumps back a
few seconds. It's good for what you describe, but the more common use is
during fast forward to skip commercials. Run forward until you see the show
resume, and then, instead of hitting play, hit instant replay, and you'll
be positioned just as the commercial ends. If you overshoot too much, hit
it again. After awhile you get a feel for when to hit it to get really
close. (I'm sure DEbig3 would always nail it dead-on!)

We just switched from DishNetwork to DirecTV, and I love the TiVo. I do
miss the commercial skip button on DishNetwork's PVR, though. Hit it
once, and it jumps forward 30 seconds. Just hit it once per commercial.

Even if we got cable TV up here, we wouldn't give up our DirecTV-
we're grandfathered in to dual networks, thanks to our being Primestar
customers when DirecTV bought them out.
We get both West and East coast feeds of ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox.

I was a long-time subscriber to DirecTV...one of their first customers
when they first started. A few years ago, they royally pissed me off
and I switched to DishNetwork and have only one regret: No NFL Football
subscription like I can get for Hockey and Baseball.
A year ago, I got the PVR from DN and am really happy about the 100
hours of recording time. I do think the TiVo feature of being able
to put in an actress/actor's name and it records everything that person
is currently starring in would be a bonus, but that's life.

I *love* getting east coast feeds on the west coast. That gives me 3 hours
to recover from a botched recording. And I can get a show that's randomly
displaced by some local sports event. Alas, I only get east coast feeds for
ABC and Fox. NBC and CBS on the west coast don't want competition from
their east coast brethren so they lock them out.

That's the "wishlist" feature, and I use it all the time to record shows
months in the future like the coming Farscape and Bab 5 movies. And as you
say, handy for catching all appearances of one's favorite babe. ;)

I'm starting to really love TiVo over the DishNetwork PVR. It's nice to
only get new episodes of your favorite show, no matter when they air.

Formatted my computer and haven't installed a newsreader since.

Aw, bless your heart! I'm doing okay, mucking along but
still having touble with my left eye. It seriously cuts down my online
time, but I have found a few crafty things I can do without having to
peer closely at the work in progress. Candle making has been my

you're doing- how's college, what game(s) you're playing, if any, etc.
(Say, if you run into any of those coffee-flavored Oreo's, how about
sending a package to me? I can't find them any more! I think they
called them "mocha". Jeez those are good. And no baking!! )

Blood pressure is fine since I stopped taking the Vioxx that

my blood pressure was rising, so I stopped taking it about
two weeks ago.
