With the apparent removal of the skill system does it matter which type of
ship I put together? Some of these changes for this NGE stuff are very badly
explained for a new player.

Piloting actually has the least changes. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by
does it matter which type of ship you put together though...

With the old pilot skills, you had to learn 1 tier at a time, you couldn't
for instance become a 4111 pilot, to get to 4xxx, you had to have come from
3333. The only real change from the old system is that there is no longer a
choice as to which 'box' you train first. Pre-NGE, I was a fan of training
components, then Droid Programs, then whichever other box I wanted more.
Now, you always train the "old" first box, then the 2nd, then the 3rd, 4th,
then go up a tier & repeat. So the Old Skill Tree would look like this:
First Column was ships, 2nd Level of Parts, 3rd Special Maneuvers, 4th
Droids & programs:

18
14 15 16 17
10 11 12 13
06 07 08 09
02 03 04 05
01

These numbers are now just stretched out flat in order & arranged around the
wheel of the skill display. As such, as a 2nd box pilot, you can fly (as a
Rebel) the Z95 or the YWing using Level 1 parts, a level 1 Droid/Computer
and whatever programs you can cram into it from chips. As a 6 box pilot
(Rebel) you can fly the Z95, YWing, YWing Longprobe with up to Level 3
equipment, Level 2 droid, the Level 1 Rebel programs of your own, plus
whatever else you can cram in from chips.

The only thing I'm not 100% sure of is what happens to those cases where for
instance, my Imperial Pilot was a 1212, She has the first 5 boxes, box 6 is
blank & highlighted and then boxes 7 & 9 are red, indicating she's earned
them. Theoretically once she earns 60K Pilot XP, she'll get Box 6 and then
start working on box 8, but I don't know that for sure.

Due to a bug, you cannot see how much XP you have earned total, though you
do get combat spam telling you how much XP you earned for each kill.

I hope that helps, if it doesn't, restate you question and I'll try to help.

Thanks

I don't think I understand still. How do I view what numbers I'm at? All I
see at the moment is that while on vendors chassis schematics have a
required pilot level of 'Basic Imperial' or whatever.
I should probably point out that my character is one of the new Jedi classes
and not as such dedicated pilot. I have done the training missions in the
starting station, however.

The Type of ship you fly is 100% dependent on the faction you choose to
fly for and some what decided by your ground faction, a Rebel can fly
for either Rebel or Neutrals in space and Imperials for Imp or Neutral.
Also by choosing to fly for either rebel or Imperials you will at that
point become rebel or imperial on the ground. Neutral in space has the
advantage of being able to attack both rebs and imps. Once you find a
trainer in the faction you want you will get a starter ship in that
faction. As you train up in piloting you will be able to use new/better
ships.
