Going DOWN ladders..?

OK- I know this is going to sound pretty lame, but how the #$@%!
do you climb DOWN a ladder without falling and taking damage..?
I remember reading the secret as it related to Half-Life, and thinking
"Hey... that makes sense!"... but of course, now that I've started
playing Kingpin, I can't remember what it said.
Mostly I've just been finding other things to jump down on, or just
sucking it up and taking the damage from falling, but #$%!...
I know there's a way to do it, but damned if I can figure it out.
Thanks for any help!

Hi,
Try crouching before you try to get on the ladder. Its a bit
cumbersome but it does work.
Also if there is a manhole with a ladder that leads down to a sewer
etc you can stand on other side of manhole (opposite to ladder) and
just jump onto the ladder.

I've found that if you approach the ladder from the far side of the
hatchway - if there is a hatch - and walk forward, you'll grab the
ladder on the way down...
