Hello,

I am sorry if this has been asked a thousand times but I just joined
the group.

I have just dug up and installed my OLD Descent 1 CD (MS-DOS).

It loads fine and plays (no error messages). However it is S-L-O-W. So
So So slow. It moves at the speed of snail. Even the demo. Even the
opening screens load up and exit slow and choppy. I would think I was
running on a PC that was old and crappy in 1995.

I have Windows XP Home edition with SP2. I am running on a Dell
Inspiron Laptop (2.0 GHz Celeron, 1 Gig RAM, 30 gig 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Intel 82845G integrated POS graphics chipset).

The Intel Graphics chipset is called The Intel Extreme Graphics card. I
refer to it as the UNExtreme graphics card. It sucks.

However since Descent was released about 1995 I was figuring the
UNextreme 82845G would be MORE than fine.

In order to get the sound to work I had to install VDMSound but the
sound works great. It does not seem to be choppy at all.

After I saw these problems I did upgrade from 1.0 to 1.4a then to 1.5.
It did not help.

Any ideas?

Be sure to mention that the framerate limiter in D1X should be set to 35fps
to solve the slowdown issue.

I am pretty sure playing Descent 1 missions D2X-XL will be at least as
much fun as with D1X, given that it is much stabler and more advanced.
And the differences in gameplay shouldn't be to noteable, after all the
Descent 1 related improvements D2X-XL has received recently.

Well, I guess D1X development stopped for a reason: it's pretty much
stable. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

Hi everybody,

I got D1 to work with D1x, but I can not use my Sidewinder 3D Pro.
It is not possible to use the axis, if I want to define it it
immediately turns to R2.
Any ideas how I could solve this?
And yes, I prefer playing D1 as opposed to playing D1 levels on D2.

Thanks!

Emil
