Greetings,

I am having difficulty in playing Descent 3 now that I am using Windows
XP.

I have the "Dual Jewel" edition and I have tried installing the latest
patches, but I still get the "Invalid CDROM!" error when I try to play.
My game CD's are legal and are not pirated copies.

I did a google search and it looks like the websites that might have
had an answer to my problem do no longer exist.

Any suggesions from those of you who successfully play Descent 3 using
Windows XP?

Thanks,

Matt

IIRC, there was a fan-made patch required for this version:
http://www.dfiles.de/download/d3/patches/d3usdjfix.zip
http://www.planetdescent.com/site/files/d3/patches/

Once you download the patch Dual-Jewel patch, you can then patch as normal.

Thanks for responding, Raymond.

Actually I downloaded this patch and then downloaded the 1.4 patch, but
I still get the "Invalid CDROM!" error.

Descent 3 worked fine when I was using windows 98, but I haven't been
able to get the game to run since I've upgraded to Windows XP.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Matt

Well it works fine here under XP sp2, what I would do first is update the
firmware on your cd drive, and try compatibility mode. Also, try disabling
the Cryptographic Service using msconfig. This has fixed issues with other
games for me.

My problem with D3 using my explorer mouse, is the lack of acceleration
slowdown when trying to aim, i.e. I should get more precision when bringing
the mouse to a stop, which doesn't happen, and it makes it very difficult to
actually hit anything .
