Author Old Timers
fake@spambuster.ca

Hi...

I just googled my name to see how old my posts are to this NG.
I found one from '96 in December. That means I have been reading this
group continuously over 8 years.

I know that the chatter about Descent here is dead. Are there
any other old timers here that still read the group, or am I the last
one? If I don't get a reply in about two weeks I'll just turn off the
lights and lock the door on the way out.

There haven't really been many important developments, at least none that
made it's way here.

I probably don't qualify as an oldtimer and never posted much, but I've
been around watching this place since 1998. But, yeah, this place is
pretty much dead - generally, not just Descent-wise - and has been for
a while. :\
Anyone else still around?

I played Descent from the shareware and loved Descent II as well. I've
visited this NG on and off since 97 and subscribed to the DDL (Descent
Developers List) at one time.

Anyone remember the "Descent Levels of the World" add on pack?
It was the result of a competition. I used D.E.V.I.L. to produce my
entry: "Cicero Outpost".

My Descent player id was "Cicero" needless to say.

The "ciqret" handle here was only used about twice when playing Quake
after which I reverted back to Cicero for that too.

For whatever reason I've decided to post as ciqret on NGs recently ..

How's that for a rambling answer?

I can't claim the honor of producing new content (kudos to Cicero!) but
I played Descent1 shareware for hours every day over dos-based PPP dialup
scripts (co-op play beating all 7 levels and the magnificent final shareware
boss: unforgettable) , and bought Kali soon after Noone (I forget his real
name now, Joe Cotton or somesuch?) discovered an assembly level bug in the
popular free PPP package that most people used back then, and compensated
for it in his code (#286, and #29 Kahn also )

Descent2 was similarly exciting, with the wonderful gauss gun,
co-operating to open hidden doors, and playing Hoard levels.

#descent on efnet IRC was also a rocking place, with intense channel
takeover battles occurring weekly, and tons of game and level discussion,
with Parallax developers often making an appearance.

Nice! LOTW was included in the Infinite Abyss D2 box wasn't it?

The oldest posting that I could find from me
was dated Feb 8 1998.
Do I qualify as an "Old Timer"?

I was using an email account over dialup on FLashnet back then.
Don't think they even exist anymore.

They were bought by Prodigy, which was then bought by SBC/Yahoo.
And yes active accounts from then are still valid

I stilll monitor it. I started with D1, worked up to D3 (never could
complete the final level, even in cheat mode.

The oldest one I could find is from January, 1st 1996 not counting the one
from December 24th, 1995 in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action dealing with
Descent as well. Quite some time that is...

Well, it's still in my newsreader but since there's not much happening here
and in the Descent world I agree that it's dead. However, ocasionally we
still play D3 on LAN parties and I'll always remember those as the good
times ;)

There is a Doom3 mod in the works for Descent.

Well, I'm getting old at 49. And I guess I can call myself an old timer in
relation to Descent. I got hooked on a demo of Descent 1. (Descent 3 didn't
work for me.) I've looked in here on occasion over the years, although I
don't know how many. Wistfully, I just sort of hope that I'll see some good
news about Descent. Of course, I am a realist. It's been dead for a while
and those who killed it just can't get around their issues, and the stinky
capitalism, so as to help us out here. But I just don't get how a dynamite
game like this - nothing on offer today interests me in the least - could go
belly up. Was it not profitable?

It was fun and I didn't have to kill or rape intelligent, er flesh and
blood, beings. Oh well.

I'm still here. I just fired up Decent Demo on XP and my old IBM laptop.
Wow... It was Retro!. No Sound but plenty of old fun. No Stick either! Now,
I have the bug and want to try d2 on XP and compile the d2x to see if I can
get it to run. I lost all my old CD's and was wondering if there is a way to
make this work??
Anyone??

Just download it from some warez site. the whole game is like 20meg.
Or it's a few dollars on ebay or amazon.

Hi... Going retro here too after reading this NG.
I found my old DescentI and DescentII packaged in a trifold CD holder! I
have also been downloading on eMule the Descent3 game and got this running
on XP also. I loaded the recoded version of DescentII and have been checking
this out for fun. All my old equipment is gone, ie: FlightStick! Keyboard
only stuff now.... but it works and gave me a rush.
Yes, Kali and online with those HUGH multiplayer rooms and trying to just
stay alive for more than 5 minutes without getting trashed. Some of the
multiplayer rooms I used to compete in were huge! A lot of fun and memories.

Yup there are still some old farts on here. I'm kind of a lurker and rarely
post.
I usually play one of the games here (D3 that is)
http://d3.descent.cx/tracker.d3
Never got the full version of D2 just the demo. Shame you can't adjust the
video settings on that.
and oh wow D1, I remember playing that over the modem with my buddy across
the street way back when...
I was Dscntman back then. :->
Look for the "Over the Hill Gang" servers - lots of old farts like me in
there LOL.
PS - Thanks for being considerate enough to hit the lights and lock up.

?

You can buy the D2 CD or any Descent collection pretty cheap on Ebay or
elsewhere and then use D2X (http://www.icculus.org/d2x/) which allows you
to play this game in several resolutions under XP just like D1X.

Thanks - I'll look into that. I love the site by the way been there a few
times.
You always beat me to the punch answering D3 help questions here though.
I DO NOT want to play you in a game if you're that quick LOL.

Oh here's a question I just thought of, I played a D3 Mercenary CO-OP one
time and the host of the game said he hacked the level to allow Co-Op when I
asked "How is this a co-op?". I would love to get my hands on that co-op
version of Merc. I tried to edit the levels with the editor that is all
over the D3 sites, but to no avail. Know anyone or anywhere I can download
that Co-Op version ?
Thanks

I don't know where you can get it but you might find someone to help you
out with hacking that level yourself on the DBB. I'm not sure, maybe all
you gotta do is set the flag to cooperative when compiling the hog file

several hours each and got frustrated with the error messages, etc., and

I'm no programmer I guess - I won't give up the day job just yet.
