D3 over Kali? How please.

| I give up. I simply cannot figure out how to join D3 games over Kali.
It looks as if I need to use the Internet Games feature of Kali since I
can see games being played. If I right mouse click on a game and select
"connect" then go into the D3 multiplayer options, I do not see a game.
I tried IPX, serial and TCP/IP direct. I also noted the missions being
played and DL's a few from planet descent. No luck. D2 works fine.
Please, what am I doing wrong? Do I need to manually record either IP or
host name of the game and enter it into the D3 TCP/IP window? I could
not get that to work either. IPX gave me an error like not found or
something.
All I could find in forums confused me further. GameSpy, Gamesurge, IRC
#Descent. I'm lost.
Thanks,
ZP

hey ziggypopp,
its relativ simple to join a d3-server with kali.
first go to kali->internetgames, kali should show you the d3-servers
and running games there. (note d3: does not use a lobby system like d1
d2 did, the games you see there are permanent running dedicated
d3-servers)
now right-klick on a server and go to "configure d3"
the first section is "file name" this should point to your "main.exe"
from d3. for me it is:
F:\d3\main.exe
next section is the command parameters (CmdLnArgs). this line is added
to the launchcode and tells d3 what to do. for me it is this line:
-nointro -framecap 0 -nomusic -nomotionblur -z32bit -nosparkles
-usesmoothing -playermessages -nopentium3 -nocompress -directinput
-deadzone0 0.0 -pilot [NuB2]DigiJo
all the parameters are explained in the d3-readme, you can just copy
this commands and at them to your kali. just change the pilotname
behind the -pilot command to exactly your pilotname. (if your
pilotname is Ziggypop, add -pilot Ziggypop)
next box is the d3 mission folder, put in the path to your d3-missions
folder. for me it is:
F:\d3\missions\
last but not least, uncheck the checkbox "use kali nickname". if your
kali nickname is "Ziggy" d3 would try to find a pilot "Ziggy" and if
it doesnt find that pilot...
ok that was it, 1 more thing. be sure to have the mission running on
the server in your d3/missions folder. if d3 doesnt find the level ,
it will crash if you try to join. the autodownload option only works
if you put in the server ip manuall, wich cant be done with kali. most
of the levels can be found at planetdescent.com
got all that right? then start kali again, go to internet games ->d3,
rightcklick on a server -> connect and ahve fun down in the mines

Thanks for all that info.
Once D3 starts, do I go into the multiplayer interface and, if so, which
of the MP options do I select? IPX, Serial...
Thanks

| Should anyone be reading this in the future, I finally figured out the
problem. Ver 1.0 of D3 did not work on Kali for me. My system is running
Windows millenium (winme) pentium III with a 3dfx Voodoo 5 card. I
believe the problem was the version of Descent. Now, here's the real
kicker, I had attempted to patch the game up to 1.4. No go. Did not work
then finally, thanks to a blurb on planetdescent.com, I figure out that
I have the Australian version of D3. So I DL the Australian 1.4 patch
and it the update ran fine. I reload Kali and bingo, I'm back to getting
squashed in multiplayer games.
One important point DigiJo left out was that you need to copy the server
IP of where the online game is being used and copy it to the command
line arguments like this -directip 123.45.67.2:2096 and then dbl click
on the row to launch the game.

| hey ziggypopp, well i forgot that with update to 1.4, of course you
need the newest d3 version
but i never need the -directip parameter for kali, kali deos add that
automatical to the commandline if you click on "join server". so you
probably have something in the setup wrong?

Thank you. It's a pain to set up the IP. I'll try it without.
