Doom3 is almost here and no hope or prayer for descent 4. The first and
ultimate doom buster as a real deal 3d shooter.
Franchise just sits under the fat lard of lawyers buttox and they ain't
moving for nuthin.
Oh well ... I won't rant but just be sad with my buds
blast from the past

Freespace most likely. In that case, Volition does have some leverage
(although not entirely.)
The Freespace rumours appeared to coincide with you-know-who trying to take
control over the trademark.

Descent never was nor will be the ultimate Doom buster simply because it's
not a ground pounder. Piloting your ship was always the biggest challenge
for newbies which effectively stopped too many people to join our
community. Descent always was in a legue of it's own and so we can only
hope and wait...

| Well, there are rumours, that a company called "High Octande Software" started
to build a Descent clone. The guys seem to start from scratch and asked the
community for some input. AFAIS most people want Desent 1/2 gameplay.
From my point of view we should wait for a beta before we start hoping...

| Wow, "uploading the new site" since mid-May. They must be using punch
cards.

| The truth is that Descent and Descent 2 were 3d shooters. True yank em and
bank em shooters while they lost focus or a desire to be the ultimate doom
buster when they sought to slow down action and create a flight sim.
What made descent a doom buster was asynchronous packet transfer in my
opinion. While most of us were ifrag and a few other junkies it was a slide
show for modems. Descent came in and not only worked but from day one it
saved Kali once the original shareware appeared. Thus folks like Jay Cotton
and Pat Klos (PPP guru) got together and brought the world into the online
onslaught.
The reason descent and later descent 2 became a doom buster was how smooth
it played and forgiving it was plus it was a real 3d shooter. Unlike
Descent 3 which was very particular at the time and unforgiving for modest
computers and all but broadband at the time. I can say that 90% of killers
on kali just stayed with Descent 1 and 2 on kali after trying the pxo that
was very very buggy at first.
Broadband if you might remember when Descent 3 came out was a very rare
commodity and descent 3 pushed the envelope needing newer rigs. I won't
rant any more. Sorry I did but it is just obvious to this old timer that
sim feel 3d shooter ( eg descent 3 ) does not bust anything but companies
that make it. While Descent 1 and 2 was the one and only 3d shooter ever or
since. Heck forsaken obviously didn't leave a mark because it was slowed
down to a sim feel and compared to yank em and bank em 3d shootem up it was
like descent 3 later found nothing compared to original real deal.
What made descent a doom killer was it's gameplay online. Doom and Doom 2
were frame shows for 90% connection speeds. Descent definately slaughtered
doom ... busted was understatement unless you had T1.
Doom3 is darn kewl just XXX Doom and Doom 2 were.
Descent has been murdered by lawyers mostly. Plus the powers that be refused
to see why Descent 3 flopped like a fish out of water and create Descent
redeux real deal shooter.
D3 had little to do with it's predecessors with even a tad less mobility the
sim feel didn't catch hold with the masses. PXO sucked during the window
that people tried it when it came out. It didn't bust anything.
Descent and Descent 2 not only busted doom but it busted out online gameplay
for the masses. Saved Kali at the time because doom just didn't work well
and Jay was bummed. Yea descent busted down many many doors and opened it
up for modems from all over the world. Kali serials went from the hundreds
to 10,000 overnight.
