A friend of mine and I have tried to play D3 via tcp/ip and can't seem to
get anywhere. We type in an address and nothing happens...no games appear
to join in on. We have even tried connecting to each other w/o success. We
are both using cable broadband (Cox ISP) on WinXP computers. He is using
XP's firewall and I am using Symantec software, but tinkering with and/or
disabling the firewall doesn't seem to make any difference. I have even
tried putting his IP address in as an allowed computer w/o luck. We're
stymied. Any suggestions as to what to try next?

You are sure you're both running the same version of D3, i.e. 1.4? If you
do then it must be your firewall, check the D3 manual on the CD to see
which port D3 is using, not sure atm.

Do either (or both) of you use a router on your broadband connection?

Even if you aren't, it's almost certain that the IP addresses you are
using are internal to Cox only, -not- public IP addresses, so pretty
much the only way your two machines could see each other would be if
you were by chance on the same network segment at Cox. Not very
likely.

Tell me the first couple of octets of your IP and I can tell you if
they are public or private, ie 192.168.x.x or 10.10.x.x.

One thing you can try would be to open up a DOS command window
(Start-Run- type in "command") and try to ping your friend. Once the
DOS window is open at the C: prompt type "ping x.x.x.x" .(Replace the
x.x.x.x with your friend's IP address.)
