| If the robots of Descent actually existed (also in modified forms.. e.g. weaps removed) what type of duties do you think they could perform on Earth here?
My oppinions:
D2's TRN Racer could be used as an impounded vehicle towing mech.
D1's Spider Mech could be used at collapse sites
D1's Mini Spider- Weapon removed, replaced by a camera. Now it could be used as a scout for the main spider, making its way into the rubble.
D2's Sidearm: See above
Sidearm Modula: Weap. removed, replaced by a camera: Roving security camera
Lifters (all)
Used to haul building supplies up in a skyscraper construction.
Low level robots (Class 1 Drone, Class 2 Drone, PIG, PEST, ITD, Orbot, Gyro) Weap. replaced with water balloons: A good fun time for kids!
Medium-Level 'bots (Hulk series, Lou Guard, Fox Attack, Class 1 Driller, PTMC DP, Seeker, Tailbot, Platform Robots) Weap. replaced with paintball:
A dangerous Paintball adversary!

The original purposes of the Robots were described in the cutscene that
provides a picture of each bot, along with their attributes, armanents and
threat level. They are all primairly designed for mining or defensive
purposes, and their designs reflect that.
Removing weapons would only work for some of the robots, as there are
generally harmless equivalents that appeared in Descent 3.

Nice free thinking Nathaniel.
Too bad most here are to hidebound to think outside the box.
There have been Sci-Fi stories around forever with similar functions, like:
Copeyes - roving monitored AI units with differential stun guns to thwart
crime and spare victims.
Telepresence micro or nano-bots <remote operator control>
to diag humans and machine problems, and to spy.
Bots are usually not "for fun" because they are pricey. We would have to
perfect the tech first, then to the point of ubiquitous hobby availability
after the Military/Treasury & Law Enforcement got what they wanted out of
it... else there would be pandemonium.
....and our houses & buildings are up to spec. All it takes is looking in a
specific frequency and you can be targeted and taken out right in your home
or apartment.
Kinda spoils the fun when ya know there is some jerk ready to take you out,
or sell pics on the Internet huh?

on the Assemblers newsgroup.
